Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning w.e 31.1.14

This we have been
Maths - making repeating patterns using colours and shapes.
using counting on to carry out addition of two numbers to 20.
RWInc - writing simple sentences using green and red words.
K&U - using 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p to buy items from the Astro Cafe.

Ideas to try at home.

Maths
Using different shapes and different colours can you make a repeating pattern? Where do you find repeating patterns? Maybe the tiles in your kitchen make a repeating pattern or the design on your curtains. Make your own pattern, can you tell an adult how the pattern would continue? Bring in your patterns to show the class next week.

Using two numbers below ten ask your child to count on to add the two numbers together. They could use their fingers, first putting the biggest number in their head and holding up the remaining number of fingers as they count on they fold down their fingers until they have none left standing and are able to tell you the answer or you could make a simple number line to help them, start on the biggest number and jump the remaining number to give your child the answer. Once your child is confident with numbers up to ten then try them with numbers to 20, start by only giving numbers that add up to below 20 using the methods above.

Literacy
Ask your child to write some simple sentences using green words and simple red words about something they have done this weekend. They can then share their sentences in class next week. Please help them focus on the correct letter formation as sent home in the sheet in their sound folders.

K&U
Set up your own Astro cafe pricing items from 1p to 20p. Take turns of being the customer and the shop keeper using the different coins to buy items from the shop. Use real money if you can to help your child recognise the different coins.

Over the next two weeks the children want to find out more about the Sun and the planet Mars. You could help your child use the internet or books to find out some interesting facts and bring them in to school - we had some great facts about the Moon. Thank you

Hello!

This week in Maths the children have been looking at halving numbers. Please have a look at the website below as it has many different games and activities for all subjects which will be useful for extra practice.

www.purplemash.co.uk

Click 'log in' and select our school. Both the username and password is year3.

As there is an INSET day next Friday (7th Feb) there will be no Big Write but please continue to practice your tables and spellings. Please also carry on reading.

In Geography we have started to look at Caerleon. We have done some research and had a brief look at some of the Roman history of it, as well as using Google maps to plot and find the quickest and shortest route from school to Caerleon. Please practice looking at maps and atlases to see where different countries are and their capitals- perhaps first focussing on the UK. It might also be an idea to research some more into Caerleon and its Roman history for some extra knowledge.

Have a good weekend

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 31.1.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Estimating and weighing

Interpreting data from a pictogram and starting to create our own

Knowledge and Understanding-

Chinese New Year- how this is celebrated and finding out about our zodiac signs/poetry

Finding out what our favourite hobby/activity (in Welsh) and creating a block graph to represent this

Using pastels to create pictures of planets

Welsh revision/games using previous learnt vocabulary

How to help your child at home-

Maths-

We used the word 'estimate' this week to have a 'sensible guesses' about how many cubes/marbles/bricks may weigh the same as an apple, shoe, book etc. The children used simple balances/scales to find out how heavy objects were using non-standard units, i.e. cubes/marbles.

Use two objects at home (ones that are similar in size are good) and ask your child to hold them and use the words heavier and lighter to describe the objects. For example 'the shoe is heavier than the toy.'

Look at a variety of scales that you may have at home, discuss how they work/how to read from them.

Next week we will be going over adding three and four numbers, perhaps have a little go at some at home, try 2+2+4+1= or 4+2+1+6=

Knowledge and Understanding-

The children really enjoyed finding out about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. They also enjoyed finding out if they were born in the year of the dog or rat and the characteristics of each. Perhaps they could find out what zodiac sign other people in your family are.

As part of our work on light and shadows, we will look more at objects that are transparent and opaque next week, can they find out what these terms mean.

Next week we will designing/creating new aliens, including details such as their names, special powers, special strengths, features, hobbies etc. Could they have a think about this in advance. Many Thanks.

This week we have been learning about-

Literacy- Writing a diary entry in the first person, pretending to land on the moon.

Numeracy- Measuring weight. Counting in 2's.

Knowledge and Understanding- Looking at different sundials and reasearching Lunar modules.

How to help your child at home-

Literacy- When writing at home encourage your children to use basic skills- tall, short letters, finger spaces and full stops. Looking at different spelling patterns. Can you write some sentences with the ow and oa sound? Repeat with ee and ea.

Numeracy- Discuss the different weight scales you might have at home. What are they used for? What are the measurements on the scales? Can you remember how many gms in a Kg? Can you weigh some items at home? First predict the weight then measure accurately. Continue learning your 2x tables out of order.

Knowledge and Understanding- Listen to the sounds around us. What can we hear at home? What can you hear outside? Can you think of any warning sounds?

This week we have been
RWI - reading and writing green words and putting in simple sentences.
Maths - naming and describing basic 2d shapes
K & U - finding out facts about the moon

Activities to try at home
RWI
Continue to work through sounds and words in the sound folders especially reading and writing green words. Remember to remind you child to say the sounds clearly without an uh sound on the end and then blend them together to read. If you child is confident then encourage them to read the words without blending. We are also encouraging all the children to write the green words, use Fred fingers to spell the word first and then write it down. Try and help your child use the correct letter formation and also the size of the letter, for example h is a tall letter so starts at the top of the line and p is a long letter which goes below the line. We are also learning to write red words such as I, the, my, a which could be used to write a simple sentence for example I get wet or I sit on the log. Please send in any writing in to school so we can have a look.

Maths
Go on a shape hunt around you home - which shapes can you find? Draw and label the different objects you find and then write which shape they are. Which shape have you found the most of? Discuss the basic properties of the shapes such as how many sides/corners the shapes have. When travelling in the car look at the different shapes you see maybe on the road signs, traffic lights -count how many circles or triangles you see on the way home from school. Who found the most shapes?

K&U
We are beginning to find out interesting facts about the planets, moon and stars in our solar system. This week we used factual books to help us learn about the moon. At home using books or maybe the internet find out an interesting fact about the moon that you didn't know already. Bring in your fact so we can share them in class.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 17.1.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Counting on in ones and tens from any number to 100

Solving word problems (adding and taking away)

Addition and the corresponding subtraction facts

Knowledge and Understanding-

Light sources and reflectors, understanding that dark means the absence of light and that it is difficult to see in the dark

Painting planets and creating pictures of our Solar System

Welsh names for different verbs, such as reading, singing, dancing, painting and playing.

What we know about our Solar System- beginning to learn some facts about different planets and their order from the sun.

How to help your child at home-

Maths-

We have done lots of counting on and back this week, saying what number is one more/less than a given number to 100. You could try this verbally and written.

We looked again at what the value of the 1 and the 6 mean in the number 16 and other 2 digit numbers. Try some like this at home- 24=20+4, or 30+7=37

We have looked at once we know an addition sum, such as 8+2=10, we know that 10-2=8 or 10-8=2. Practise some of these. We will be looking at this again in class.

Have a go at some 'word' based problems, such as there were 4 crabs in the rock pool, 8 starfish came along too, how many altogether? Try some involving money, both adding and taking away.

Knowledge and Understanding-

We talked about sources of light and looked at many objects that give out light, also some that simply relfect light such as disco ball or spoon. Have a look at home and make a list of sources of light around the home.

We talked about darkness and if we liked it or not, learning that it is hard to see in the dark without any light at all. We used our other senses to help us navigate in the dark.

We will be starting a class 'fact file' next week, could you choose a planet and find out a few facts about it and bring them in next week.

Wednesday, 15 January 2014

Dosbarth KP/RM Week Ending 17th January 2014

This week we have learning about:

Science: the classification of animals. We discussed the different groups of animals and defined each type. We found out some 'really' interesting facts about different types of species.

Geography: We located Caerleon using Google maps and worked out our journey times according to different criteria

Maths: we have been look at reading scales of different units, including reading the temperature on a thermometer and working out the difference between the minimum and maximum temperature, including when a reading is a minus reading.

At home you may like to....

Science: Create a classification chart showing the classification of animals including some examples of species for each group.

Geography: locate your own home using Google maps or similar programme. Work out the journey time from your home to Caerleon. What is the difference in time from your home to that of the journey from school? if you went via Chepstow or Monmouth how much time would that add to your journey? What is the difference in journey time if you went by car and then travelled the same journey by bicycle?

Maths: Use World Weather temperatures in newspapers or online. Choose different countries/ capital cities around the world, work out the temperature difference between two localities or record the min and max temperatures over consecutive days in one locality and work out the difference in temperature in one day/ several days.

Talking Homework: to look a pictures of winter woodland settings. Consider the vocabulary you could use to describe the scene. Whilst reading a range of text, collect examples of 'power openings'. How would you use a power opening for a woodland setting? Consider the characters that may appear within the setting and the impact that they may have on the atmosphere within the setting.

Dosbarth KS/JW 10.1.14

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all!

This week in Literacy we have been looking at recounts as well as focusing on grammar such as adverbs, adjectives, nouns, plural forms etc.

In Maths we have been looking at problem questions and trying to reason mathematically to find a solution to the problem. We have also been ordering 3 digit numbers on a number line.

We have been using the Internet to research Hadrian's Wall in Discovery and created some information posters using our research.

Big Write will take place on a Friday this term and the children will be given their Big Write activity on the Friday before to allow them the weekend and school week to research and prepare.

Big Write for next week is to write a description for an Imaginary world setting. The children can think about stories such as Charlie and the chocolate factory, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia etc and think about the setting . What sorts of things are there? Chocolate river, gum ball trees, talking rabbits etc. The children are to think about different adjectives to make their setting as exciting and interesting as possible.

Please continue to practice the spellings and learn its in the children's homework log books and any times tables they are unsure of.

PE kits will also be needed for a Monday and Thursday this term please.

Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning w.e. 10.01.14

RWInc –  blending to read green words and sight read red words I, the, My

MMS – using pennies in real life stories.

K&U – making quiet and loud sounds with musical instruments

How to support your child at home:

RWInc

Look through the sound folder with your child and identify and reinforce any sounds they are unsure of. Use the word time sheets to blend the sounds together to read the words.  If your child is confident at blending encourage them to just read the word without Fred talking it first.  You could also reinforce the letter formation, especially some of the more tricky letters e.g. k, x, z e.  Help your child start in the correct position using lined paper and say the saying out loud as they write the letter e.g. z – zig, zag, zig. (These are in the sound folder) Praise your child for correct formation including tall, short and long letters.

Maths Makes Sense

Create a shop at home and price the items in amounts of up to 10p e.g. a teddy at 5p.  Using only 1p coins ask your child to count out the correct number of coins to purchase the item independently.  When they are confident with this activity then ask them to buy two items and, counting out the pennies for each item individually and then counting the pennies altogether using 'how much is there here?'  Please extend your child to amounts up 20p once they are confident.

Knowledge and Understanding

Make a simple shaker at home using a tube and some rice or dried peas.  Ask your child to make a loud noise and a quiet noise using their shaker.  We will be designing and making our own instruments in school over the next few weeks so it would be great if you could bring in your instrument to show the class.
