Year 1 Homework blog

Good morning,

This week in year 1 we moved away from volcanoes to look at hedgehog safety during bonfire night and how to keep hedgehogs safe in general. We made a hedgehog hotel in our grounds and I apologise in advance if they want to go digging up the garden to create their own hedgehog home.

The following weeks will also see a shift in focus due to various topical events such as remembrance day, children in need ETC. Next Friday is fancy dress to support Children in need. A suggested donation of £1 would be welcome and I have been told that children bring it in on the day. There is no theme but if your struggling for ideas then anything spotty/Pudsey works well.

Next week for maths wen will be looking at “skip counting” in 5s (the precursor to times tables.) For homework can you practise counting in 5s with your children. To help them you could use a interactive number square ( https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares) or write the numbers down and show them the pattern of counting in 5s. (Alternating 5s and 0s)

Here is a free online game  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/chinese-dragon-ordering

Here is a counting by 5s song by pinkfong, the same company as baby shark, which may help them show some enthusiasm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g8iu0SQJoY

You could try dot to dot in 5s. This link includes some free examples. (Involves printing and https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-t-12515-counting-in-5s-dot-to-dot-sheets-pirates

Kind regards,

The year 1 team
