Home Learning Dosbarth Miss Foster w/e 29.11.13

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 29.11.13

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Partitioning numbers to 10

Recapping number bonds to 10

Beginning to learn the ten times table

Literacy-

Instructional writing- looking at features of instructions and ordering a set of instructions

Knowledge and Understanding-

Investigating waterproof materials

How to help your child at home-

Maths-

We looked at different addition combinations to make numbers to 10, so what ways can we make 6 or 8 by adding two numbers. Try this with numbers to 15. They could write the sums down and bring them in next week.

So for 5, it could be 5+0/0+5, 4+1/1+4 and 2+3/3+2.

We did lots of mental maths with counting in tens, and knowing that 4 lots of 10 is 40 etc. They are becoming really good at this.

Knowledge and Understanding

We have looked at lots of examples of instructions this week, how to make things, cook things, do things etc. Could they have a go at writing some simple numbered steps for how to brush your teeth or how to wash your hands? Remind them of a title, list of equipment needed and some numbered steps to follow.

Dosbarth KP/RM week ending 29.11.13

This week we have been learning to:

Literacy - edit instructions and write our own set of instructions to make a Roman mosaic.

Numeracy - use calculators accurately to solve multi step word problems.

Science - we carried out the practical side of our investigation, testing how  soundproof different materials are.

Art - making Roman mosaics using tiles and clay.

Talking homework for big write - our big write next week will be to write a letter of complaint.  You could look at the layout of a formal letter, the formal language used in a letter of complaint, how you need to balance both sides of the argument but explain why your argument is valid.

How to help your child at home:

Numeracy - practice accuracy using a calculator. Can you add up a shopping bill and get the correct answer!

Science - next week we will be analysing the results of our science experiment and drawing a bar graph of the results.  What should an accurate bar graph include? We will be concentrating on deciding on a scale independently for our graph.

Welsh - revise the use of the placemat, asking and answering questions.

Costumes - please could all costumes for The Snow Queen be in school by Monday 2nd December.  We can't wait to how wonderful the children look.

Spellings - continue to practise the spellings the children bring home in their purple books.

Many thanks.

This week we have been learning-

Literacy-Writing a diary entry.

Numeracy- Finding multiples of 10.

Knowledge and Understanding- Looking for objects that are made of more than 1 material. Discussing properties of materials.

How to help your child at home-

Literacy- The children wrote diary entries, pretending to be Lowry and they were amazing. Their language was superb, for eg- The sky was festooned with murky smoke. I scurried around quickly to find my brushes. Next week in Big Write we will be writing instructions on how to make Divali pots. Perhaps in preparation you could help your child to think of interesting words to enhance their writing.

Numeracy- Counting in tens. Identifying the next multiple of 10. For eg- 47=50      17=20 etc. Also what number goes with these numbers to make a multiple of 10? For eg 47+3=50

Knowledge and Understanding- Can you name some objects that are made of metal? Where does metal come from? What are some of the properties of metal?

Dos KS/JW week ending 29/11/13

Next week's Big Write will be a character profile. Choose a character from a book you have read or have had read to you recently. Talk about words that you might want to use to describe the character's appearance, personality and behaviour. Do they have any special or magical powers? What do they do in the story? Do they change during the story? You may want to use some words or phrases from the book. What do you like about the character and what don't you like?

Our maths group this week have been working on place value and using their knowledge of it to add and subtract. For example we have been adding 1 , 10 and 100 to 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. If your child is secure with this, ask them to add 2, 20 and 200 and so on.

In Science this week we have started looking at shadows and how they are formed. Can your child investigate how a shadow changes shape? Try using a lamp in a darkened room and shine it on an object. What happens to the shadow as you move the lamp around.

Dosbarth KS/JW

As next week is 'Genre week' there will be no Big Write, however, please do have a think about 'Instructions' as this is our focus for next week.

Our focus next week in Literacy will be Instructions and in particular for board games. It might be a good idea for you to play a board game that you haven't played for a while over the weekend and use the instruction leaflet to help you.

What are the features of instructions? What types of words do they use? Are there pictures/ diagrams to help?

Please continue to learn your spellings and learn its that are in your Learning log as well as your times tables. We have moved onto our 3x tables, but please do continue to practice your 5 and 10's too.

Have a lovely weekend.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 22.11.13

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Counting on and back from the teen numbers to the twenties and from other decades to the next, so 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 or 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42

Using positional language such as above, below, under, in between, left, right, next to, on, in etc.

Using 'whole turn' and 'half turn' for describing movement

Knowledge and Understanding-

Investigating how we can change materials, for example what materials can bend, be stretched, twisted etc.

Pattern rubbings using wax crayons

Beginning to think about how we can test which materials are waterproof

Welsh clothes and colours

How to help your child at home-

Maths-

We looked at 'crossing the decade' when counting on and back in ones. We talked lots about the pattern of numbers so how the tens and units change as we cross from one decade to another. Practise some counting on and back but starting at different numbers, rather than starting from 1. So count on from 16 and stop at 24 or start at 47 and stop at 53 etc. You could try writing out some sequences too.

Use positional language to describe the position of things, e.g the bed is below the clock or the plate is between the knife and fork.

Also try using 'whole turn' and 'half turn' and ask your child to turn in these ways.

Knowledge and Understanding

Look at some materials around the home and talk about why they are used for particular objects, so why do we use glass for windows? Why fabric is used for clothes? What would cutlery be like if it was made from sponge etc?

Try out some pattern rubbings around the home/garden. Bring some in so we can have a look.

Next week we will be looking at instructional writing in Literacy, so have a look at some books you may have at home of how to cook/make things. What do instructions contain-e.g. a title, a list of equipment, numbered steps, bossy verbs, photos or pictures.

Dosbarth Mrs Miles W/E 22.11.13 Home Learning

This week we have been learning about-

Literacy- Retelling the story of Divali using interesting sentence openers. Analysing poetry. Writing numbers.

Numeracy- Counting in tens above 100, forwards and backwards.
Adding together 3 numbers.

Knowledge and Understanding- The festival of Divali. Finding out about the city of London. Identifying various materials around the school.

How to help your child at home-

Literacy- Looking at different poems. What is your favourite Sentence? Who has written the poem? Are there any words that you don't understand? Is the poem funny? Does it tell a story? Do you have a favourite poem? Write down numbers 1-20. Learn how to spell them. Which is the most difficult to spell?

Numeracy- Continue to count in tens forwards and backwards. Add together 3 random numbers above 10. Encourage your child to explain how they worked the sum out. Find the biggest number first and put it in your head. Then count on. Are there any near doubles? Or are there any multiples of ten to help you count on in tens.?

Knowledge and Understanding- Can you find out about The Monument in London. Why was it built? When was it built?
Can you find out how glass and plastic is made? Write a few sentences.

Numeracy - the children have been collecting data in order to draw and analyse their own pie charts.

Science - the children have been investigating the link between the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection with light.

History - the children all acted and sung wonderfully in our class assembly on the Romans. Well done everybody and thankyou for the amazing costumes! The children looked splendid.

Talking homework - we will be continuing our big write from last week, producing information leaflets on the Roman baths.  Should the children find any information leaflets please bring them into class.

Ways to help at home -
* research some facts about the hero you dressed up as today in preparation to write about them in Welsh next week.
* research Roman clothing and footwear.
* practice using a torch and mirrors to see if you can reflect a beam of light ( never into your eyes!). Is the angle of incidence the same as the angle of reflection?
* and finally don't forget to keep learning your words for The Snow Queen.

Week ending 15th November Dos KS/JW

Please continue to practise the spellings and ' learn its ' in your homework log books. In maths this week we have been practising the 3x table and working out change from £1, £2, £5 and £10. If possible, give your child opportunities to pay for items when you go shopping. Can they work out how much change the shopkeeper/ cashier should be giving them? They could also set up a their own shop at home, buying and selling items.
We have started learning about light in science. Make a list of sources of light. Think about the amount of light each source produces, how far the light travels and whether it is man made or natural.
All children will have details of next weeks big write in their home log books. They will be writing haiku poems about winter. Discuss what winter Wow words they will use. Please don't actually write the poem at home as we will do this in class on Monday.
Have a good weekend.

Dosbarth Reception Home Learning w.e. 15.11.13

This week we have been learning:

Knowledge and Understanding

-       Identifying different types of materials; metal, glass, fabric, plastic and wood

RWInc

-       The sounds r, j, v, y  and blending cvc words using all the sounds we have covered so far

How to help your child at home:

RWInc

Continue to learn the sounds sent home each day and using the sheets blend the letters together at home.  This daily support really helps reinforce the sounds with the children and just 5 minutes each day can make a big difference so thank you for your time.  You can also help your child by encouraging them to say the sayings as they write the sounds, for example as they write the letter c, they can say curl around the caterpillar.  This will help them to remember the letter formation.  Please feel free to use the back of the sound sheets to write down words your child has thought of with the sound and even draw pictures.

Knowledge and Understanding

Have a look around your house and find things which are made of different materials listed above.  Ask your child to tell you what they are made from and describe how they feel and look.  For example a scarf is made from fabric (wool) and they may describe it as feeling soft or a fork is made from metal which is shiny and cold to touch.  For an extension activity you could draw some circles on a piece of paper and write in each circle a different material, your child could then draw pictures of objects/or cut them out from magazines for each of the materials.

You may have noticed some sheets coming home with your child to accompany their home reading book.  Please help your child complete these sheets as they will extend their understanding of the book and what they have read.  Please return the completed sheets and I will collect them when your child next reads in school.  The sheets will only be sent out with certain books and not each time your child reads, Thank you.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 15.11.13

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Doubles to 10, so double 1, double 2 etc.

Counting up and back to 100 in tens

Sorting objects into groups using different criteria, starting to look at a Venn diagram

Knowledge and Understanding-

Looking at the buildings in Trellech and what they are used for

Asking what we are wearing in Welsh and some common clothes names

An introduction into materials- what common materials we knew and describing them using appropriate vocabulary

Talking about what makes a good friend and what makes our friends special to us

How to help your child at home:

Maths-

Practise counting up and back in tens to 100, saying them and writing them. Try starting at say 60 and going above 100, not all children are at this stage yet. Write out a sequence with some multiples of ten missing, can they fill in the gaps? For example, 40, 50, __, 70, __, 90. Try some counting up and down. Keep using the question 'how do you know?' to get them to reason and make links all the time with their maths learning.

You could also show them a number, e.g 40 and ask them to tell you 10 less and 10 more. Again, get them to tell you how they knew this.

Use a pile of objects or pictures and ask them to sort them into two groups using given criteria, it could be as simple as objects/toys into colours, shapes, materials etc.

Have a look at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/maths/organising_data/play/

Knowledge and Understanding

We looked at a few common materials this week, including wood, paper, glass, plastic, metal and fabric. We used a lot of new vocabulary, such as rigid, flexible and waterproof to describe some simple properties of these materials. Have a look around your home, what can you see made of glass? Fabric? Wood? Perhaps you could draw some pictures of what is made of different materials. Can you describe some of these properties?

Have a look at: http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks1science  and choose the Materials 1 option.

Or http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/sorting_using_mate.shtml

If this link doesn't work, try typing 'cbbc materials game ks1' into your search engine.

The children are really enjoying learning the spider song for our Christmas Play, I only sent the words home as we had an accident with the photocopier! I know it is hard without any music, but just learning the words is a great help. J

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 8.11.13

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Telling the time on an analogue and digital clock

Using a timer to see how many things we can do a minute, e.g. hop on one leg, write our  names, click our fingers

Recognising halves of shapes and writing the fraction ½

Literacy-

Big Write- poetry about a Bonfire and fireworks

Knowledge and Understanding-

The story of Guy Fawkes

Looking at the buildings in Trellech and what they are used for

Asking what we are wearing in Welsh and some common clothes names

How to help your child at home:

Maths-

Keep practising telling the time on different clocks, the children have been brilliant at this, so thanks for working hard at home with it too. Some children have gone on to half past times.

We started to look at shapes and how we can split them into two equal parts. We folded paper shapes to show that both parts need to be the same. We looked at shading in half a shape and writing the fraction to match it. Draw some shapes and practise colouring in halves in different colours and writing the fraction ½ (we used a straight line, but on the computer it is diagonal!) Perhaps you could draw some shapes and split them into two sections that are clearly not in half and ask your child to say if it is in half or not.

Knowledge and Understanding

Make a list of some of the buildings in your villages or that you pass on way to school. Say what they are used for. The purpose of this was to see that buildings (in our local area) often have many different uses, e.g. the church, doctors, pub, shop, farm etc.

Next week we will begin to look at materials, including their properties. Have a look around your home at what materials you can see and what they are used for, e.g. glass for windows, wood for furniture etc.
