Year 4

Year 4 1.4.20

Welcome to our Wednesday learning!

As normal for us now, the literacy and numeracy are on google classroom for you.  For numeracy you will be dividing by 10.  You can complete your answers on a new google docs or in your book, which ever is easier for you.

For literacy you will be gathering ideas for a spring themed poem using personification.

We have really enjoyed seeing the circuits and art you have created outside – some of you are even involving the whole family!  This is a great way to keep yourself calm and happy.

Today – try and think of five things you are thankful for at the moment. I am sure there are many more than that but pick your top five.

Suggested spelling activity for today is bubble letters. Write your spelling in your best handwriting then afterwards write it in bubble letters.

Take care and stay safe,

Mrs Maunder and Mrs Phillips.

Home Learning 1.4.20

Reception Class 1.4.20

To the Parents and children of Reception Class.

Good Morning all,

This year I am going to miss doing my April Fool Prank! Perhaps you can think of one to do at home!

There are so many online resources and companies allowing free subscription etc. I did notice Amazon are offering stories that will help them continue dreaming, learning and just being children. https://stories.audible.com/start-listenhttps://stories.audible.com/start-listen

Literacy- all Groups

We are going to recap the sounds you have learnt so far with a lotto game. I've explained it in more detail on last Wednesday's blog. All groups- Recap the sounds that you have learnt. Hopefully you have been able to make some flash cards with the words on. You could also make it into a bingo game to play with the family. Obviously, you can sound out the letters like Fred and pretend you are not sure of the word. You could also throw a few HFW (high frequency words) into the mix-I, like, my,  you etc. Or you could make 1 sound a lotto board and another a HFW board, as these are the words children always find tricky.

These are the HFW

I  go  come  went  a  was  look  there  are  we  and  me  like  going  she  they  my  see  on  away  this  play  no  yes  for  can  he  am  all  you  said  to  day  there

Numeracy

Keep up with the tuck shop if you can. If they pay for each snack, drink and food using coins everyday, it will help them so much when using money. It's a concept all children find tricky. But when you have completed a few weeks of this, you can then add together a drink and snack.

Creating Patterns

Ideally this can be done using natural objects that you might collect from a walk. For eg. stones, twigs, feathers or objects in the house, shells, pasta shells, beads etc. Demonstrate a simple pattern for e.g. 1 twig, 1 shell, 1 feather. What comes next to repeat the same pattern? You can also do this with toys. For eg. Red car, blue car, green car. What comes next? Perhaps you can draw pictures in you book to show the pattern.

All Children- Create a simple pattern of 4 different objects. Keep repeating.

Most Children- Create a pattern with 4 objects, but a little more challenge. For eg. 2 feathers, 1 twig, 2 shells. 2 feathers, 1 twig, 2 shells etc.

Challenge- Create their own repeating pattern having already completed the above activities.

Mindfulness- First thing in the morning if you can. PLEASE!!!

Mountain Rising

Stand straight with your feet apart, arms by your sides. Feel the bottoms of your feet planted on the floor. Keep your eyes open.

Imagine you are a mountain rising up from the ocean. Your head is the top of the mountain.

Raise your arms, fingers apart. This lifts your mountain higher. Hold this position for a moment, solid as a mountain.

Notice if you have any thoughts or worries. See them as tiny waves splashing the mountain.

Breathe in and breathe out to blow the waves far out to sea. Watch the water become calm and still around you.

Lower your arms, take a mindful breath and relax. You can stay strong as a mountain all day.

Creative

Visit www.hwb.gov.wales/

Login using Hwb username and password. This was either glued inside your child's reading diary or was given to you with your yellow exercise book. (I know it was a bit hectic on the last week).

When you get on the Learning and teaching for Wales page, look for the Just2easy image box and select. If this doesn't work visit www.j2e.com. Select Hwb, and login using Hwb username and password. Then you should see an orange image box on the right called jit5, select. Then select paint to create your picture. If you have a printer, you could display or send to a grandparent, or just play around with it. On this site there are several educational apps you could explore.

Year 2 Wednesday 1 April

Thank you for sending over any work- I am so impressed with what you have been doing! :) Don't forget to make the most of the dry weather by getting outdoors, exercising, taking time to relax or even reading a book in the garden.

Literacy
To describe a character/ setting
Use the link to access the story, 'The way back home.' https://www.literacyshed.com/thewaybackhome.html
There is a description/ blurb underneath about the story but don't read this to the children. Let them watch it several times so that they begin to see what is happening and may even put their own ideas/ story line to it. Ask them questions after each watch. Do their ideas or thoughts change? Are their thoughts similar to the blurb? Share the blurb at the end if need be- to steer in right direction of storyline. After several watches, explain they will be describing the alien/ place they land so they need to think really carefully about those parts in particular. I want the children to write a description of the alien they came across and/or the strange place that they landed. They should draw a picture of their alien and/or setting so that it matches their description.

Bronze- draw and describe the alien you came across. Use adjectives to describe.
Silver- draw and describe the alien you came across and the place you landed. Use adjectives and similes to describe.
Gold- draw and describe the alien you came across and the place you landed. Use adjectives, similes and alliteration to describe.

Maths
To revise the expanded method
We have used the expanded method before for Maths but will now recap this method with larger numbers and also numbers that bridge 10. Questions are set on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB, a mixture of addition and subtraction.

e.g. 27+31
Tens first- 20 + 30 = 50
Units next- 7 + 1 = 8
add the answers together 50 + 8 = 58

36+59
Tens first 30 + 50 = 80
Units next 6 + 9= 15
Then add the tens answers together- 80 + 10= 90
then add units answer- 0 + 5= 5
add total answers together 90 + 5= 95

(Your child may be confident enough to add the answers without having to partition them again as in the example. This is fine. Whatever they are confident and knowledgable with.)

143+236
hundreds first- 100 + 200= 300
tens next 40 + 30= 70
units next 3 + 6 = 9
add answers  300+ 70+ 9= 379

Subtraction involves the same method as above but - instead of +. You still need to add the answer together to get your final answer. ( Subtraction sums will not bridge 10 in this activity)

Bronze- set 1 task
Silver- set 2 task
Gold- set 3 task

Don't forget you can have a go at any of the challenges, you may start off easier until you are confident then work your way up as they get more challenging. You are also welcome to complete more than 1 challenge too.

Topic
To design and make a rocket
Linked to the Literacy story above, your topic work is to design and make a rocket for you to travel in. Think about that your rocket will look like- you may like to make it as creative a possible. It does not have to look like a standard rocket if you don't want it to. Think about what materials you can use- anything recyclable would be handy! I look forward to seeing your rockets! You may want to do a rough design on paper to help you first so you know what materials you need and how you will construct it.  There are no specific challenges for this activity- your creativity can lead the way!

I look forward to seeing your work
Enjoy!
Mrs. Hassall

Year 1 Wednesday

English Following a rhyming pattern.

Following on from yesterday I would like learners to look at starting to plan a sequel to Oi Frog where they come up with their own animal/noun pairs. To help them they can read through or access the Oi Frog book again.

To Help

  • To help the learners it will be useful to use a rhyming dictionary https://www.rhymer.com/.
  • I have created a class discussion on hwb classroom where learners can post up their own ideas and they can gain some ideas. I have already posted 1 idea but I need help, join me in the discussion to help!
  •

Bronze: Create a starting list of 2 or 3 animals together first and use the hwb classroom discussion Oi Frog animal pairs for inspiration

Silver: 1 of the pairs needs to include spider monkey and 4 to 5 pairs.

Gold: Look back over their animal pairs. What do they notice about the end sounds?

(They should notice that rhyming words share the same ending sound, though they may have a different grapheme/spelling of that sound). Can they identify which RWI sounds are used? A example of this would be bear- and stair (air not fair) or underwear (

To help the learners it will be useful to use a rhyming dictionary https://www.rhymer.com/.

Math-exploring the number 12.

The number 12 is an important number this time of year. I would like the learners exploring the number 12 and finding all the shapes and patterns they can create with that number. This task is based on a Nrich activity. https://nrich.maths.org/13704. The video is a bit tedious so I would suggest going straight to the solutions tab and looking at how other children explored the task.

Before completing the given tasks I would like the chn to have complete freedom to explore the number 12 themselves and create their own patterns/videos or drawings.

Bronze: As well creating patterns using 12 objects can you use these objects to build the number 12?

Silver: Using 12 counters, stones, leaves or whatever else you wish try to create see what 2d shapes you can create? Ideas are Square, Rectangle, Triangle.

Gold: Can you create a square of 12 objects that is 3 stones by 3 stones? Explain your answer.

12 treasure hunt. Can they go on a hunt for anything that they find that is related to 12 and create a list? Examples could be a clock and months of the year

Topic-The last supper.

Another 12 that you could uncover is Jesus and his 12 disciples. Show the learners this clip from BBC Bitesize, https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zgsb9j6, that explores the last supper. (Please view the clip before hand to see if you think it is suitable for your child. They have covered the last supper in an assembly so they are aware of the themes but it does mention Jesus dying).

I would like them recreate the last supper scene using a medium of their choice. They could paint the last supper, draw or use Jit 5 paint. (If you use Jit 5 paint you can download pictures to act as a template.

Bronze: recreate the scene. I have uploaded 2 pictures of the last supper to support in HWB classroom in files.

Silver: Label Jesus, Judas and the bread and wine. Can they explain, verbally or via writing, the significance of each? (Jesus is believed to be the son of God, Judas betrayed Jesus for money ETC)

Gold: Label Jesus and the 12 disciples. For this the children will have to research the names of the 12 disciples, which they can do using Encyclopaedia Britannica  on HWB

All the best,

The year 1 team

Year 3 Distance Learning Week 2 Day 3

Wednesday, April 1st 2020

Good Morning. I have posted this work on Google Classroom as well. Please feel free to try. I am hoping it works for you. Please let me know if there are issues and I'll try my best to help.

Just a reminder how to carry out the work:

Bronze – all complete

Silver – additional challenge

Gold – high challenge

Literacy: HF words for this week. Please carry out Blue Vowels activity whereby you write out the word but each vowel must be in blue –

want, wanted, water, where, which, white, who, why, wish and window

L.O: To write a short story including speech reading comprehension skills

We have already looked at using speech marks or inverted commas this week so use those skills that you have learnt to include in a short story about anything you'd like. Remember to punctuate like those examples below and a new speaker goes on a new line.

For example: "Hello," said the shopkeeper. Or:  The shopkeeper said, "Hello."

Hello?" the shopkeeper asked nervously,

"Hello!" shouted the annoyed shopkeeper.

Bronze Level – Write sentences including speech marks with a comma or question mark.

Silver Level – Write sentences including speech marks with a comma, exclamation mark or question mark.

Gold Level – Also try the speaker before the speech as well as after

Numeracy:

Warm up: Practise your x4 & x8 tables. Remember if you can do your x4 then just double these answers for x8. Also log in to Hwb and then click on J2E and use the

TT Blast which is an interactive game to help with times tables speed. You can access this daily to improve on score and speed.

L.O: To use the column method for subtraction to solve written problems

Watch the video again if you need to go back through

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n7kesMDCrs

Bronze Level – with partitioning
Example:
There were 55 flowers in a field. Some children pulled out 32. How many flowers were left?

55 – 30 = 25

25 – 2 = 23

1. There are 33 children in a class. One day, 20 children turn up to school. How many children were away that day?

2. A teacher has 56 pencils. She gives 24 out during the day. How many does she have left?

3. Hannah had 87p. She bought a badge worth 55p. How much change did she get?

4. There were 76 flowers in a field. Some children pulled out 30. How many flowers were left?

5. Jack has 76 sweets. He eats 35 of them. How many sweets are left?

Silver Level – Without Partitioning

2. There were 65 cups in a shop.  37 fell when a shelf broke.  How many cups were unbroken?

3.  Sue collected 212 tokens.  She swapped 109 of them for a giant teddy bear.  How many tokens did she have left?

4.  Bill's story was 161 words long. Ben's story was 95 words long.  How many more words did Bill write than Ben?

5.  There are 315 pages in my book.  I have read 127.   How many more pages do I need to read?

  1. Harry had £257 in his bank account.  His mum let him spend £129 on a new bike.  How much was left in his account?

  1. Mr Green Spent £316 on a PS4 and games. He spent £139 on a new television.  Find the difference between the costs.

  1. Mrs Miles had to travel 342 miles to reach her destination but only managed 148 miles because she broke down. How much further does she need to travel?

  1. How much less is 256 than 534?

  1. Take 237 from 621.

Science: Continue with your PowerPoint about plants

Remember -

Bronze Level - This can include: the parts, what is needed to keep them alive

Silver Level - This can include: the parts, what is needed to keep them alive, types of plants and how some have adapted to their habitats.

Gold Level – Use transitions and animations to improve your PowerPoints.

Daily Welsh: To learn the days of the week

Continue practising the days of the week using the game on the link below:

Year 6 - Spelling and Times Tables

Year 6 Spellings for this week will also be available from 9am this morning.  Remember to use the activities we complete in school to learn your spellings.  Let me know your score from last week's spellings - ask someone in your house to test you.

I'm also hoping you are learning your timetables - use J2E TT Blast or Hit the Button. See if you can improve your scores.  if you are using TT Blast, I can see how well you're doing.  I know Yr5 are currently at the top of the school chart - we need this to be Yr6.  Come on - you can do it!

Take care, Mrs Cotton.

Year 6 Tuesday 31.3.20

Good morning Year 6

Again thank you for all the work you are doing at home, it's lovely to see all your hard work and how engaged you are in your learning.  I'm very impressed with your ICT skills with the uploading of pictures, emailing and collaborating online.  Keep it up!  If you are not using the Google Classroom and completing work in your book then that's great too.

Google Classroom is ready again for you at 9am this morning.  i need to apologise as I scheduled the literacy incorrectly yesterday - sorry.  I explained in the blog that you were going to design a new Easter product, however I scheduled the Read Theory instead, so today the Easter product sheets will be come available for you to use.  If you completed this yesterday - great you can complete the Read Theory.  if you completed the Read Theory then you can complete the Easter product.  I hope this makes sense.

Here is a brief outline of today's activities, there is a more detailed explanation in each activity on Google Classroom.
Literacy - To design a new Easter Product or Read Theory activity. (If you need your password please email me)
Numeracy - to solve word problems using 24hr clock.
Topic - to understand the Water Cycle.

Remember to ensure you have time in the fresh air and enjoy being outside in your garden.  Why not take 15 minutes to sit still or lie on a blanket in your garden and close your eyes.  Listen carefully to the sounds you can hear. Use the breathing techniques you have been taught in yoga.  Enjoy being calm and peaceful - this works well in school.

I'm looking forward to seeing your learning again today - also I would love to see or hear about any other activities you are doing whilst at home.  Take care all and remember you are all amazing.

Mrs Cotton.

Year 5 31.03.20

Today's tasks are on Google Classroom from 9am - full instructions attached to each posted assignment. If for any reason the online documents don't work, or you would prefer to work offline some of the time, it is absolutely fine to complete a task on paper. You can always take a photo of what you've done and share this with me through a comment on the post, or via Hwb email.

Literacy - creating a digital book

Maths - identifying regular and irregular polygons

Expressive Arts - Zendoodle animals

Music - listen to and appraise music of different genres

Spellings were also uploaded yesterday - remember to learn, and ask someone at home to test you at the end of the week.

I would like you to spend at least 10 minutes per day on j2blast to really become confident with your times tables - this can be practising, live challenges, or a mixture of both. It's great to see that lots of you have been on since last week, and I'll be interested to keep an eye on who's taking top spot on the leaderboard!

Parents, we have also been looking at apps to support well being in upper key stage 2 children, especially as they may be using phones and social media more often than usual. One app we have found is the BBC Own It app, available to download for free for both Apple and Android. If anyone does use it we would really like to hear how it works.

Take care and stay safe, and keep up the great work!

Year 4 Tuesday 31st March

Year 4 31.3.20

Welcome to Tuesday learning!

Your literacy and numeracy are scheduled to be live from 9am on google classroom for tomorrow, with instructions how to complete each activity. There is lots of advice for you including powerpoints and video's and we are available to help you as well through our email.

Numeracy today is about negative numbers and literacy is learning about apostrophe's.

There are five topic activities for you to complete throughout the week – please don't feel you need to complete all of them in one day.  For those of you who have tried the music it has been lovely to hear your positive responses.  Please email me if your log in hasn't reached you yet – I know a few of them decided to disappear!

Joe Wicks is doing his daily workout on youtube at 9am which is a great way to start your day with some exercise.

Don't forget your spellings for the week and your Welsh.  A suggested activity to help with your spellings today is "Story story".  Write a story using all of your spelling words, making sure to underline your spellings so they stand out.

Take care and stay safe,

Mrs Maunder and Mrs Phillips.

Reception Home Learning 31.3.20

Reception Class Tuesday 31st March

To the Parents and children of Reception Class.

I hope your week has started well. If possible, try and do some aerobic activity daily, just to get your heart beat going. It could be jogging, star jumps, burpees, running on the spot, skipping, squats, lunges etc. Start with 10 minutes and build up to half an hour. Before you know it, it will be an hour. However if you are doing the daily Joe Wicks workout, then maybe don't overdo it. This is a chance to get us all fit and make you and your child feel healthier.

Literacy

Mrs Garbett's group

oo sound- took look book shook

Today will be the oo (look at a book) sound. Make 4 words with oo sound. Get your child to identify the special friends (oo) and then blend and read the word. After a few recaps you can say the word for your child to write down. Do this with the 4 words and then 1 recap word (ow word). Mark together. Remember to use tall and short letters, (they are not all the same size). Tall letters should touch the top of the line and small letters half way. If you can see your child forming letters incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them. Dictate this sentence several times and then encourage your child to write it down- Then you will be a frog. Mark together and write out again if it needs to be corrected. If you can see your child forming letters incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them.

Mrs Evans group.

ng- sing wing ring thing

Today will be the ng sound. Make 4 words with ng (a thing on a string) sound. Get your child to identify the special friends (ng) and then blend and read the word. After a few recaps you can say the word for your child to write down. Do this with the 4 words and then 1 recap ch word? Mark together. Remember to use tall and short letters, (they are not all the same size). Tall letters should touch the top of the line and small letters half way. If you can see your child forming letters incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them. Dictate this sentence several times and then encourage your child to write it down- Get a hat. Get a hen. Mark together.

Mrs Miles group

Word Time 4-ship fan lip had

Recap all initial sounds. This is really important. Say the words above in FRED TALK (say each syllable rather than say the word). Encourage your child to tell you what you have said. Only tell them the word if you have said it several times and they still don't know. Then dictate one word at a time and encourage your child to write it down. Mark together. Please support your child to form letters correctly with the handwriting sheet that they should have in their sound folders. Also perhaps play fastest finger with the sounds learnt so far.

Numeracy.

Sorting/counting

This can be done using items that are indoors or out. You can record in your book or complete orally.

All Children-Find 4 things that are made of metal, 3 things made of plastic, 2 things made of paper and 1 thing that is shiny. Count your objects. Which material have you collected the most of/least? Can you add together the number of plastic things and the shiny object? Record your answer. Repeat with other numbers.

Most- Find 6 objects made of paper, 7 objects made of plastic and 8 objects that are made from glass. You can draw them if you like to help with the sums. Check you have counted correctly. Which material have you collected the most of/least? How many objects are made of paper and plastic? Record your answer. For eg. 6+7= Repeat with other sums.

Challenge- As above, but collect different materials with numbers above 10. If you took 1 away, how many? Complete some addition/subtraction sums.

Mindfulness. First thing in the morning if you can. The whole family, you all need this!

Rings of Light

·         Sit mindfully, with your spine straight and body relaxed.

·         Notice your breathing. Take 3 soft, slow, mindful breaths and feel them in your body.

·         Imagine a glowing white light of wisdom between your eyebrows.

·         Breathe out and send the light out and around you like a ring of protection.

·         Now see a red light of courage inside your mouth. Breathe out and send that light around you.

·         Finally see a blue light of calm inside your heart. Send the blue light around you as a third ring of protection

·         Take a moment to feel safe inside the rings of light around you.

·         Carry that safe feeling with you into your day.

Creative

Can you paint, draw, collage etc. a beautiful sun. Display in your window for all to see.

Quick update

My apologies my last post contains a layout error. In the first section you will see:

Gold: Explain and give examples of proper nouns. The Learner gets bonus points for using proper nouns.

Bronze: The child has to shout stop every time they hear a noun

Silver: Child identifies what is special with the nouns. (Most of them rhyme, each noun is a animal followed by an object.

Gold: can they think of their own animal/object pairs

The bold section should of been deleted as it belongs to the guided reading section.

Year 1-Tuesday 31/03/20

English. Identifying nouns.

I will provide a quick explanation of what a noun is. Please skip this paragraph if your confident on the definition (I do not mean to patronise I am sure you are all aware of what a noun is but you may be unaware that they are called nouns. When I was in teacher training I myself needed a quick reminder.) Nouns are naming words like table and bear. You can have proper nouns that are names of a single, unique entity. (A planet is a noun, Jupiter is  a proper noun because it is a specific planet.) You can also have abstract nouns like happy and sad. (Names of emotions)

Explain to the learners that you are on the hunt for nouns. (Explain that nouns are naming words that tell us what a object, person or emotion is called.)

Bronze: Give a few examples and play a game of noun tennis. Noun tennis is where you say a noun and your child has to say a noun back. I would not go into details of proper nouns but if the children says a proper noun you could acknowledge that. Oh great you have given me a special type of noun called a proper noun.

Silver: You can make the game harder by making sure all the nouns have to be related by a topic or theme. (Something that interests the child like food, science, football ETC). Every noun can be a point and you stop when the person cannot think of a noun quickly enough. (Be generous the first couple of times then introduce a time limit of 10 seconds or so). The winner can decide what film to watch at the end of the day or what food to eat for tea to make it interesting. (You can make this a circle game if the whole family would like to play. )

Tomorrow the learners will use this book as a starting point to write their own sequel.

Guided Reading-Identifying nouns

Read the fantastic Oi frog book.  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItLi6xx4YEY ).

Bronze: The child has to shout stop every time they hear a noun and identify which word is a noun.

Silver: Child identifies what is special with the nouns. (Most of them rhyme, each noun is a animal followed by an object.

Gold: Can they rescue the poor frog and think of a different noun for the dog to sit on? (Sit on a pog, log, Mog, in some fog are some examples.)

Tomorrow the learners will use this book as a starting point to write their own sequel. (Tomorrow will just be the planning stage)

Maths-Exploring different types of graphs.

This activity is just for the learners to have a go at seeing the different ways that information can be stored. It is about their opinion and using jit5 charts (Found on hwb-then j2easy).  they can explore the different types of charts.

I have tried something a little bit different and created a recording of the task with my explanation of the task and my thought process behind why they should do it over the top. To see the video clip follow this link https://youtu.be/JtrrR7Vom7w. (Alternatively type this into youtube- tuesday maths task spider monkey-my channel name is Mr Carbis) This clip explains the task so you don't need to read on.

To create the chart they will need some data and for this we will be looking at a science project that wants volunteers to look at 10 second drone footage and click yes or no as to whether there are any spider monkeys. https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/rossmcwhirter/spotting-spider-monkeys/classify. If the children do this 10 (or more times, up to them) and create a table in jit 5. (See this link for my example https://www.j2e.com/jit5?fileId=NThPWePpXMUBCUuY)

Bronze: Creating the chart themselves and seeing which of the four types they prefer.

Silver: Justifying their choice. So it could be that they picked the pie chart because it is really easy to see that more clips had spider monkeys.

Gold: Using there understanding of halves and quarters to explain the data. IE Just over half of the clips had a spider monkey.

Kind regards,

The year 1 team.

Y3 Week 2 Day 2

Tuesday 31st March 2020

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Hope you are well and keeping occupied but also taking time to look after yourselves. It has been wonderful to see the positive responses from parents and pupils about the work they have been set and carried out. Obviously in my capacity as a teacher I need to ensure work is set for your child to help them with their learning but I do appreciate that we are just starting to adapt to the situation and this can take a toll on our emotional health. Keep working hard but keep safe.

These are the activities for today:

Literacy: Practise yesterday's spellings using the pyramid activity. Just a reminder:

For example: white
