This week we have been learning to:

Literacy - write personification poems about Mount Vesuvius, based on our novel " The Secrets of Vesuvius".

Numeracy - finding the equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages and then using them to find quantities of an amount.

Science - analysing the results and graphs we drew from our sound proofing experiment and writing conclusions using our scientific knowledge.

Christmas - putting the final touches to our concerts in preparation for the performances.

How you can help at home:

Welsh - write a short passage describing yourself, using the placemat as a structure to help you.  Don't forget to use the bocs bendigeddig to add those important extra details.

Science - we will be studying the eye and the functions of each part of the eye.

Spellings - final spelling test of the term will be on Monday so keep practising!

Baking - next week there will be a spot of cooking going on in class (as well as a few other christmas activities!)! If you have any christmas cookie cutters we would be very grateful if you could bring them in for us to use on Monday the 16th.

The Snow Queen - finally, we would like to say how very proud we are of all the children for their performances in the Snow Queen.  The costumes you provided were fabulous and Thursday evening was truly magical!

Thank you for your continued support this term.  Have a wonderful christmas and a happy new year!

This week we have been learning about-

Literacy- Writing about Samuel Pepys. Researching King Charles 11.

Numeracy- Measurung in centimetres and metres.

Knowledge and Understanding- Great Fire of London. We found out what the houses were made of and why the fire spread so quickly.

How to help your child at home-

Literacy- Practise writing their home address. Using wow words to describe some of the things they would like for Christmas. Next week in Big Write we will writing a news report from the London Gazette. (About the Great Fire of London).
Also, just to let you know, we successfully got rid of the invasion of rats in our classroom!! Footprints were festooned everywhere. After writing to pest Control, the nice man played a melody on his recorder and took them over to the forest where they have found a comfortable home.

Numeracy- Recognising why we have to measure things to get an accurate reading. Being able to tell the difference between length and width.

I hope you enjoyed our concerts. The children were amazing and as you can probably imagine, very nervous. Thank you for the fabulous costumes. The children looked so lovely and I was very proud of them.
Thank you also for your support this term. Have a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 13.12.13

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

3D shapes

Knowledge and Understanding-

Making predictions about materials that will float or sink

Giving reasons why materials are used for particular items/uses

How to help your child at home-

Maths-

We looked this week at a cylinder, cube, cuboid, triangular prism, sphere and a pyramid. We talked about some simple properties of each shape, such as the number of 'faces' and the 2D 'faces' that make up the shape. We use the term 'faces' instead of 'sides'. For example the cube is made up of 6 square faces.

Have a look at home to see what examples of these 3D shapes you may have, e.g. ball for a sphere or a dice for a cube etc. Talk about some of the properties. Could you draw some and bring them in?

Knowledge and Understanding-

We made some predictions and tested some materials to see if they sank or floated. They came up with some really good explanations as to why, using their knowledge of material properties.

We talked about why certain materials are used for particular objects. For example, why is metal good for cutlery or keys and why wool or fabric is good for clothes. Again we used some very impressive vocabulary to giving reasons.

Dosbarth KS/JW

Big Write for Monday is to write a letter to Father Christmas persuading him to give you a present this year. Think about how you will go about persuading him and the layout of a letter. Remember you can make a note of your address and bring it into school on Monday, but please don't write the letter at home.

In Maths this week we have been looking at adding and subtracting near multiples of 10. For example 57+31, first we would break 31 into 30 and 1, add the 30 onto the Tens column first, then add the 1 at the end. The children have been able to use facts they already know to help them with this and have been successful at adding and subtracting in their heads- well done!

Please continue to learn your tables and learn its that are in the back of your homework log.

Have a lovely weekend.
