Dos. KS/JW week ending 11/4/14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths : telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes (KS maths group)
telling the time to the nearest minute (JW maths group)
Discovery: We have been choosing our topic for next term
PE: Dragon Multi Sports

You can help at home by:
Maths: Using the sheet sent home, fill in one clock each day. Write both the analogue and the digital time and write the activity and how many minutes it is until the next hour. Please bring this homework into school next term to be marked. (3 housepoints given for each completed sheet.) Continue to practise your learn its and times tables.

Discovery: As a class, you chose France/ Paris to be your topic for the Summer term. Write down what you know already about France and what you would like to know by the end of the term. Think about how you could find out the answers to any questions you may have.

PE: Using a ball, a measuring tape and some cones (stones or marks made using chalk would do) create your own game. If you have time, write a set of instructions that a friend could use to play your game. Think about the throwing, bouncing and catching skills that we practised in our lesson. If you bring in your instructions, your friends could have a go playing your game during breaktimes.

Have a wonderful break. See you in the Summer Term.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 11.4.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Handling data- gathering information and recording it in a block graph

Using the words 'tens' and 'units' to describe a 2 digit number

Re capping o'clock and half past times on an analogue clock

Knowledge and Understanding-

Looking at how Christians celebrate Easter and symbolism of the Easter egg.

Literacy-

An acrostic poem about 'Easter.'

How to help your child at home-

Maths

Ask them to give you a number that has '3 tens in' or '5 units in,' some found this a bit tricky this week.

If you can just go over some of the learning we have covered this term over Easter that would be great. For example: telling the time; counting on and back in 2's and 10's; money to pay for an amount and give change below 20p. Also place value of 2 and 3 digit numbers, as well as number doubles and bonds to 10 and 20.

Next half term we will be looking at digital clocks and using vocabulary associated with turns, so clockwise and anti-clockwise and quarter, half and full turns.

Knowledge and Understanding

We had a visit from a man that works for 'Purple Mash' this week to show the children (and staff!) some of the features of the site. Keep having a look around the site and complete any of the games/creative/written activities.

Our topic next term is 'Under the Sea' so feel free begin researching into sea-creatures and different oceans and seas to start with.

Also if you could keep practising their assembly words ready for our assembly after Easter.

Thank you and have a lovely Easter break.

Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning w.e 4.4.14

This week we have been
Literacy - using pictures to tell the story of The Lost Land
Maths - recognising and using coins to 20p
RE - beginning to learn the story of Easter

Activities to try at home
Literacy - read a favourite story e.g. The three little pigs together. Draw a long wavy line on a large piece of paper and then starting at the beginning of the story create a story map using pictures to show the main events of the story. Ask your child to tell the story to someone else just using the pictures. Bring your story map into school so you can tell your story to the rest of the class.

Maths - set a shop pricing items between 1p and 20p. Using real money if possible ask your child to give you the correct money for different items using a variety of coins. Discuss which coins we have 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p. Talk about the different ways we make amounts where there isn't just one coin such as 3p, 7p, 12p. For example 3p could be 2p and 1p or 3 lots of 1p. Challenge your child by seeing if they can add two items together and give you the correct money.

RE - have a look on Purplemash under Easter, select Easter Research and complete the activity together. You can bring your sheets into school next week.

Just for fun - if you are on purplemash select phases 3-5, go to paint and then choose butterfly. Use the paint brushes to create a symmetrical butterfly.

Just a quick reminder about the Easter competition. Bring your Easter Bonnets or Hats into school by Wednesday morning ready for the judging. Have a lovely weekend.

Science: We are going to carry out an Easter Investigation next week! To help us answer the question: 'Why are some materials right for the job and others wrong?' We will use eggs to help us answer the question, I will provide the eggs! Please bring materials that you think will protect our eggs when dropped from a height! Don't forget to consider the variables when planning our investigation.

Maths: Continue to recall your 'learn its' to improve your score and try one of the challenges to help you apply your numeracy skills to other curricular areas.

Challenge One:

In April Flash Harry bought a saddle for £100

In May he sold it for £200

In June he was sorry he had sold it

So he bought it back for £300

In July he got tired of it

How much did he make or lose?

My age this year is a multiple of 8

Next year it will be a multiple of 7

How old am I?

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 4.4.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Place value of 2 and 3 digit numbers

Using non-standard units to measure length(cubes, feet, hand spans etc). Beginning to realise the need to use use a standard unit, e.g m or cm to measure a length. Using a 30cm ruler to measure in cm.

Knowledge and Understanding-

Designing, making and evaluating our rockets

Practising for our class assembly.

Easter activities

Literacy-

A Welsh Myth called 'The Lost Land.' Writing a character description of the main character and writing an alternative ending to the myth.

How to help your child at home-

Maths

Ask your child to have a go at writing out the value of the digits in two digit numbers, e.g 25
=20+5, 47=40+7, try some 3 digit numbers, 117=100+10+7 or 136=100+30+6. Try this the other way, where you give them the break down and they have to write the two or three digit number, so 60+9=69. They should all be fairly confident with two digit numbers now, some will find three digit numbers a little too challenging.

Ask them to explain to you how many tens and units are in each number and in the case of 3 digit numbers, how many hundreds, tens and units.

If you have a ruler at home, draw some lines on a piece of paper and ask them to measure them. Can they draw a line that is a given length. This is still quite new for a lot of them.

I have sent home some words to learn for our class assembly, could you help them to learn these. I will be sending out a letter about costumes next week.

Knowledge and Understanding

Have a look on purple mash at some of the Easter activities. www.purplemash.com. Choose Monmouthshire and then Trellech from the My Schools drop down menus. Both username and password are year1. On the homepage there is an option for Easter.

Thanks for all the bottles/boxes you sent it, the rockets look great! Have a nice weekend.

Numeracy- Time, fractions and money problems.

Knowledge and Understanding- Easter story and understanding the importance of hearing devices.

How to help your child at home-

Drop down menu- Trellech, Log in details are year2 and password the same. Go into main menu-Literacy. Then Myths and Legends. Finally Castle captions. Children can play around with the cations and pictures or experiment with a different layout.

Numeracy- Recognising quarter to and quarter past times and corresponding anologue time. Encourage your child to say the time digitally (only quarter to and past). The children find this challenging, especially for eg. 06.45

Fractions- Draw a square and fold into quarters. Shade 1 quarter. How much is shaded? Shade 3 quarters. How much is shaded? (3/4).

Money- Apples cost 21p each. Oranges cost 32p If you bought 3 apples and 2 oranges, how much change would you recieve from £2.00? Also any money problems that have 2 maths calculations. Giving change is a challenging concept.

Knowledge and Understanding- Next week we will be making a hearing device and investigating what we might need. What improves the device? What doesn't work? How can we measure which device works better? If your child has any ideas, they can draw or write them down. We will experiment with the children's ideas.

If you have any cardboard egg boxes, could you bring them in please. Thank you. Enjoy the weekend.
