Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning w.e. 27.06.14

We will be concentrating on completing our story books for the next couple of weeks.  So far the children have completed the author section and thought of their 3 characters for the story.  Some children also had a go at writing the blurb.  The next section is to write the first chapter of the story.  You can use the next two pages in the books to write and illustrate the first chapter.  If possible can you please complete the first chapter by friday.  Thank you

Other activities you might like to have a go at together at home

find out three interesting facts about a sea animal of your choice. We have been learning about dolphins and this week we are looking at sharks so maybe you could think of something a little more unusual top write about.  You could find a picture using books or the internet and write the facts around or under your picture.

take a look at this website and have a go at recognising numbers to 100 by posting the correct letter

Dosbarth KS/JW w/e 27.6.14

This week we have been-

Maths- telling the time in both analogue and digital

Science-looking how liquids turn into gases

Have a look at the time at home and work out what the time will be in 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes. If you are confident with this try seeing what the time will be in 10 minutes, 40 minutes etc. See if you can then turn the time into digital. You can do this with a digital clock too and then draw the analogue clock with the same time on.
Have a look at some websites such as the BBC to find out more about solids, liquids and gases. Can you think of any examples of a liquid turning into a gas?

Please continue reading and practising your spellings and times tables at home.  Also please don't forget your PE kit and Hockey and Swimming kit for Friday too.

Enjoy your weekend

Dosbarth Mrs Miles W/E 27.6.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Capacity, ml and l

 Knowledge and Understanding-

Co-ordinates-treasure maps

Different habitats and what animals they would expect to find there

Literacy-

A postcard from Brazil

How to help your child at home-

Maths

We used the terms full, half full, empty etc when looking at different containers. We estimated and tested how many cups may fill different size and shape containers. Then we talked about ml and l and that 1000ml was the same as a litre. Have a look at bottles/jugs/containers at home, can they look at how much liquid they contain. Talk about if this is more/less than a litre. I have sent home a sheet for them to do and bring back next week if you have to chance to do over the weekend.

Knowledge and Understanding

We made a treasure map this week and used co-ordinates to identify the location of different things on the map. We also made a large scale map and used directional language to navigate around the map. Could they make a simple one at home, remind them to use ABC along the horizontal axis and 123 for the vertical axis.

Could they choose a habitat and draw some of the animals they would find there, they could do, dessert, pond, artic, woodlands, hedges, flower bed etc.

Can they show you some of the following actions that we practised in PE this week-skipping, frog jumping, leaping, balancing, distance jumping, hopping. They know the actions really well!

Have a great weekend.

Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning w.e. 20.6.14

This week we have been

Using bossy words (verbs) to begin to write instructions
Counting on in 2s and 10s.

Activities to try at home

Write a short set of instructions for completing a simple activity such as brushing your teeth, getting ready in the morning or making a cake. Think about different bossy words you could use to write each step of your instructions. Can you add adverbs to your instructions?

Encourage your child to count in 2s and 10s. Discuss the patterns with your child, see if your child can write the numbers correctly. Take a look at Topmarks website for activities counting in 2s and 10s.

Our story book
We have decided we are going to write our story entitled Under the Sea. This week I have sent home each child's book so they can complete the first page (yellow). We have decided we will think of 3 characters to include in the story. Use the first page of your book to name your characters and draw a picture of each of the characters, some children decided they wanted to use alliteration to name their characters. We also discuss completing the blurb for our story including a short paragraph of what the story is going to be about. Please return the booklets next week, thank you.

I just wanted to say how proud I am of all the children for their brilliant class assembly on Thursday - you were all amazing, thank you.

This week we have been learning about-

Literacy- Looking at different leaflets to see how the writing is organised. What is it trying to advertise? What is your favourite leaflet? Why? Writing a leaflet to advertise Trellech School.

Numeracy- Adding by counting on. Subtracting by counting on or back.

Knowledge and understanding- Pirate adventure to The Virtuous Well.

How to help your child at home-

Literacy- Next week we will be creating a leaflet to advertise Trellech and it's historical features. Perhaps you could think of some ideas that you could put in your leaflet. Do you have any pictures or photographs to include?

Numeracy- Choose 2 digit numbers, subtract the smallest from the largest. Think about what strategy to use.

Knowledge and Understanding- Perhaps you could do some research on the Tump?

On Monday we will be completing a Treasure Hunt around the village. Hopefully we will find treasure!!

Dos. KS/JW week beginning 16/6/14

This week we have been learning:

Maths - fractions
ICT - we have programmed at least one of our sprites to move
Science - turning solids into liquids

How you can help at home:

Maths: If you have lego at home, find a 4 x 2 piece. Assume that this is a whole, can you find a piece that would be half of that whole? Then try to find a quarter and an eighth. What about a three quarters? Can you find two quarters? What do you notice about this piece? Can you find any other equivalent fractions?

ICT - This week we have been learning about programming and coding. WE have programmed our spirites to move or/and say something. At home, play on some of the games on the website. Once you have had a good play on a game, try to decide how you can improve it. Press on the tab 'Look inside' where you will see the programming for each sprite used by the game. Now change some of the commands and see what happens to the game. Can you improve the game?

Science - We have experimented with turning solids into liquids. Can you think of how a liquid could be turned into a gas and how? If you are not sure, try using the internet to help. The BBC website has some interesting interactive science games that might help.

Enjoy the sun this weekend. Try to forget about the football and we' ll see you on Monday!

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Money- what coins are needed for different totals?

How many more pennies to make up to next multiple of 10 and giving change from 10p and 20p

 Knowledge and Understanding-

Sorting animals using their own criteria-beginning to look at the animal groups, such as birds, mammals…

Asking what's wrong- Beth sy'n bod?  Welsh body part names-role play of a doctor's surgery

Literacy-

Big Write- A poem about the forest

How to help your child at home-

Maths

Using coins at home, ask your child to make different amounts, some children are working below 20p, others are able to go above this now. Also, ask them to give you change, so perhaps set up a little shop using food or toys, can they give you change below 10p and 20p? We found change by subtracting or finding the difference by counting on, see what way they prefer.

Have a look at http://www.topmarks.co.uk/interactive.aspx?cat=15 Some nice games that we used here-'cashing in' and 'change exchanger' were good.

Knowledge and Understanding

Talk about plants and animals in your environment at home. What types of animals are there? We talked  briefly about animals that swim, fly, etc. We will look more at this next week.

Can they find out about the term 'habitat' and what habitats they may expect to find in the school grounds/forest next week?

Another busy week- with a visiting Theatre production about healthy eating, sports afternoon and forest school!

In case you didn't see the blog last week- if you have the odd photo that you can send in of your child on a holiday, they would be great to use for a display in class about holidays from the past. Thanks.

Dosbarth 1 Miss Foster Home Learning W/E 13.6.14

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Dividing

Counting in 2's, 5's and 10's

 Knowledge and Understanding-

The Seaside now and then- finding out about the seaside has changed over the last 100 years.

Throwing techniques and accuracy- underarm throwing

Plants and animals in our school environment

Welsh body part names

Literacy-

How to help your child at home-

Maths

We began to understand the concept of dividing, by sharing objects into groups of equal numbers. We practised writing the division symbol (which I can't do on a computer.) We wrote a number sentence where the first number was the total number of 'things,' then the division symbol, then the second number was how many groups to split the 'things' into, then the answer being how many 'things' are in each group.

So, 12/4=3 (Not the division symbol we used) We started off by lots of sharing into two groups, then built up to 2, 3, 4 etc. Try some- they will need 'things' to physically share at this stage, although some children have caught on to dividing by 2 being the same as halving.

Knowledge and Understanding

As part of history work on the seaside, can you send in a photo of your child at the seaside/on holiday so we can compare old and new photos. We are looking at what people did at the seaside/clothes/toys etc.

Just a reminder for next week- Tuesday they can wear non-uniform if they bring an item in for the tombola stall. Wednesday afternoon, starting at 1pm is our school sports day and Thursday is forest school.

Friday, 6 June 2014

Dosbarth Mrs Cotton Home Learning W.E 6.6.14

This week we have been
Maths - counting in 2s to 20
Literacy -using alliteration to describe sea creatures
K&U - finding out what uses electricity to work

Activities to try at home
Maths - help your child count in 2s by saying the numbers out loud up to 20. You could have a go at drawing or collecting sets of 2 objects and counting the objects in pairs, this would help your child understand why they are counting in 2s.

Literacy - we used alliteration to describe the sea creatures in big write today and the children came up with some brilliant ideas including cross crabs, lurking lobsters, stunning starfish. Draw an under the sea picture and then label your creatures using alliteration, can you think of words to describe a dolphin, an octopus or a jellyfish. Bring you pictures into school next week to share with the class.

K&U - together have a look around your house to find things which use electricity to work. Draw or write the names of the things you find. Only look for things which have to use electricity to work e.g a toaster and not batteries or are rechargeable. Also have a go at finding out where electricity comes from.

Many children are having new sounds sent home in their sound folders once or twice a week. Please continue to help your child learn these sounds, both reading the sounds and using them to spell green words. Thank you

Just a quick reminder that Forest School starts on Thursday so please remember to send in appropriate clothing that morning, especially a waterproof coat just in case.

Thank you and enjoy the weekend.

This week we have been learning about:

Maths-

Multiplication

 Knowledge and Understanding-

The Seaside now and then- finding out about the seaside in the past.

Sports day practise

Sea pictures using chalk/pastels

Literacy-

Recipes for our 'outdoor kitchen'

A postcard from a seaside holiday in the 1900's

How to help your child at home-

Maths

We began to look at the 'x' symbol and used lots of language such as groups of and lots of.  We linked multiplication to begin with as repeated addition and gradually moved away then to just multiplying.

So for example, 4 x 2 is the same as 2+2+2+2 =8 and so on. We used x10, x2 and x5 this week. They know x10 mentally and some are beginning to grasp x2 and x5 mentally too. Practise some at home, both the repeated addition and the multiplying by itself, some children may still need physical objects to count.

Try this at home-  http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Knowledge and Understanding

We talked about things we do and see at the seaside and how this had changed from things that happened 100 years ago. In particular we looked at clothes and past times. We found out about bathing machines, the children were fascinated by them! See what else you can find out about the seaside from 100 years ago. Perhaps they could make a little now and then picture to show the changes.

Next week we will be looking at body part names in Welsh such as head, hand, leg, feet, tummy…Could they draw a picture of themselves ready to use in an activity with this.

Next week we will be looking at maps including using co-ordinates.

Also don't forget our trip to forest school on Thursday. Thanks.

Dos KS/JW week beginning 2nd June

This week we have been learning:
Maths: Using vertical written methods to add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers
Science: solids, liquids and gases
Pe: Football skills

You can help at home by:

Maths: Ask your child to show you how they add/ subtract vertically. Can they explain it to you? When adding, what happens when the units column adds up to over 10 or the tens column adds up to more than 100. When subtracting two digit numbers, how can you complete the sum if the units column is impossible. (eg 1- 6 or  4-7)

Science: This week we have described the differences between solids, liquids and gases. Can you make a list of materials that, using transfer of energy ( eg by heating and cooling) , can move to a different state. Have a look at the BBC schools website as they have some information and games that might help you.

Football: This week, we started football skills with Andy Beattie. Practise some of the skills such as dribbling, trapping the ball and passing. Using some of the ideas from our Dragon Multiskills sessions, can you make up your own game to practise these skills.

Don't forget to read your book and practise your spellings this week.
