This week we have been learning

This to try at home

RWInc - we have concentrated on recapping sounds and using assisted blending to help develop our blending skills, especially bears and zebras. This is when the adult says the word, really emphasising the sounds first and then saying the word asking the child to copy what you have said. Make sure you face each other and that you only choose words which contain sounds your child is super speedy at, you can check this first using the sound sheets. Repeat the word a copy of times before moving on and only use a few words at a time. Little and often is better for this activity. Tigers and giraffes have also been using their Fred fingers to spell words which they are enjoying however some need to recap the letter formation so they are more confident when writing down the sounds. First check your child can write the sounds, just start with the first 10 maybe and then use these sounds to write words using Fred fingers.

Maths - we have continued to look at measuring using a length of ribbon to find objects longer than and shorter than. We have also used cubes to measure to see which is the longest by counting the number of cubes. Maybe you could draw around one hand from each family member and use 2p coins to see how many coins you need to measure your hand, from your wrist to the tip of your longest finger - who needs the most coins? Maybe you could also try your foot, who uses the most coins and therefore has the longest foot?

Please continue to learn words for the Christmas play. Many of the children know what to say but we have been encouraging them to use louder voices and be a little slower when they speak. Also costumes need to be in by Friday please and please return the signed face painting permission forms, thank you.

Could you please send in a large cereal box decorated with Christmas paper and labelled with your child's name. Thank you.

Year 6 week ending 28.11.14

This week we have:

Literacy - been performing our play scripts of the murder of King Duncan from Macbeth, as well as publishing our own newspapers detailing the murder.  We definitely have some budding actors and actresses!

Numeracy - concentrating on different forms of addition and subtraction, namely that of compact and expanded.

Welsh - we have been focussing on reading skills, being able to discuss Welsh texts in pairs and as a class.

Art - preparations have begun for our 2015 calendars that will be coming home at the end of term.

How you can help at home:

Numeracy - next week we will be extracting information from tables and charts and looking for similarities and differences to practice our reasong skills.  You may like to use the following link in preparation for this.

Topic - we will be continuing to work on our topic of how best to improve Trellech Primary.  We will be beginning to plan a letter, sharing our vision
for the future of Trellech!

Christmas play - rehearsals are well under way, with nearly all children knowing their lines off by heart.  Please continue to practice with your child, focussing on volume and clarity.  We would be grateful if costumes could be into school by Monday 1st December.

Spellings - the children have brought home their spellings in their homework books, any time you can spend on these would be greatly appreciated.

Year three week ending 28/11/14

This week we have been learning:

Numeracy: Subtracting using a variety of strategies
Literacy: Using 'word' to present our spells/ poems
Discovery: Christmas art/ craft

Numeracy: We have been subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers by using a variety of methods such as subtracting near multiples of 10 or by jumping back from the biggest number to the smallest. Each Thursday we have a short quiz, called 'learn its' to test how quickly we can answer some useful additions and our times tables. Your child will have come home with their current list of 'learn its' which you can stick in the back of their home log books. Please could you help your child to learn these as they form a vital building block on which your child can work out more complex addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations. You will find some ideas at the back of your child's home log book on how to help them learn these. All the children can work them out but they need to be able to recall them rapidly.

Literacy: We have listened to most of the children read out their favourite poems this week and have a few to listen to next week. Well done to all! We have created our own poems as well this week and have used 'word' to type them up. For homework, have a go at typing your favourite poem up. Try to change the font, the size of the font and the colour. Can you remember how to start a new line and how to copy and paste? What about type a capital letter? Can you find out how to decorate your poem? You could either add a border or copy a picture from the internet and paste it in.

Try to remember to bring in an empty cereal box for our Christmas work next week. (Keep what you are making a secret so you can surprise your family when you take it home!)

Knowledge and Understanding- Identifying balanced and unbalanced forces. 
How to help your child at home-
Literacy- aw sound as in yawn and dawn. Recap or sound as in sore. Complete a spelling test.- crawl  door  draw  saw  poor  more  yawn trawl. 
Have you got any interesting winter poems at home you could bring in? Can you think of some personification sentences? We could display them in our classroom ready for Big Write. For eg-  The frozen leaves shivering in the blustery wind.
Numeracy- Recap digital and analogue time. Support your child to count around the clock in 5's. Tell the time- quarter to and quarter past using digital and analgue times.
Can Miss Foster's Literacy gp remember their Animal homework please.
Also could your child bring in a large cereal box so we can make them into bags for Christmas.

This week we have been learning about:


Mathematical Development-

Carroll diagrams

Adding 1 and 2 more to numbers and taking away 1 or 2, using the vocabulary 'one more' or 'two more' or 'one less' or 'two less.'

Recapping number bonds to 10. For those children who have secured their recall of bonds to 10, we looked at bonds to 20 and 100.

Knowledge and Understanding-

Gravity- finding out about where we see gravity in action.

(Next week we will be investigating friction and thinking of where and when it is useful.)

How the festival of Divali is celebrated at this time of the year.

How to help your child at home-

Mathematical Development-

Practise saying the number before and after a given number, some children worked with numbers to 20, others can do any 2 digit numbers. Then try two more/less than a number. This can be verbally or written down.

Practise number bonds to 10. 9+1, 8+2 etc. Have a look at

Knowledge and Understanding –

Talk about what they know about gravity and where they see examples of it around them, e.g things falling off tables, jumping up and down etc.

We will be starting our PowerPoint projects this week, so hopefully they all have something in mind to begin from. On Monday the children will be bringing home a letter regarding costumes for the Christmas concert. Let me know if there are any queries/questions.

Year 4 w/e 21.11.14

This week we have been-

You can help at home by-

Literacy- research about Dr.Barnado and his work during Victorian times. You may like to use some of this information in your story. Have a look at other Victorian stories, what type of language do they use and what sort of events happened that you could use too?

Maths- practise your 3,4,5,6,7 timestables and have a go at dividing using whichever method you prefer.

Topic- please keep learning you words of you don't already know them. We only have 2 more practices left until the real thing.

For our assembly, if the children are Ghana they have been asked to wear any brightly coloured clothes. This can be a dress, skirt, top, shorts or trousers, for the girls we also suggested some form of headband/ scarf If they wish. Also a pair of sunglasses if possible. For those who are Wales we have said anything that they would wear for the eisteddfod- Welsh rugby/ football tops, Miners or Welsh ladies. Also a scarf or hat of possible. If you have any questions or worries with the costumes please get in touch. I have asked that the costumes be in by Thursday 27th for our dress rehearsal please.

Activities to try at home

RWInc - it is great to see lots of children having a go at writing the sounds on the sheets each night. Remember to recap handwriting previous sounds, including your name and green words using the correct letter rhymes to help formation. This can be done on a separate sheet or on the back of your sound sheets. I look forward to seeing them in school. Continue learning your sounds and reading green words using Fred talk or Fred in your head.

Maths - collect a small range of different objects from around the house for example a pencil, a stick, a length of ribbon and place them in order from shortest to longest. Can you find something longer or shorter than the pencil/the rug/a book. Draw the members of your family who live with you in height order, who is the tallest? Encourage the use of the words taller, shorter, longer, taller than, shorter than, longer than, tallest, shortest, longest when you are out and about e.g. The lamp post is taller than me or the dustbin is shorter than me.

Tonight some children bought home words to learn for their Christmas concert. Please help them learn their words, encouraging them to say the words in a loud, clear voice. Also your child should have bought home a costume letter - sorry the date on the letter should say Friday 4th December, however you are welcome to bring them into school in a carrier bag, labelled with your child's name when they are ready. If you have any queries about your child's costume then please let me know.

Year Six Week Ending 21st November 2014

This week we have been....

Welsh: learning key vocabulary to help us read Welsh texts. We looked at reading strategies that will help us when reading.

Literacy: we have been writing a play script for our text Macbeth. We considered the key features necessary. Next week we will perform our final version in our groups.

Talking homework: we will continue to write our letter sharing our concerns about the safety of pedestrians in our village. We discussed this and shared our concerns on Friday in preparation to continue next week.

We will also write some poems to express our gratitude to our support staff, some of these will be shared during our 'celebration assembly' on Friday.

Mini Project: we began discussing what we liked about our school and if given the opportunity what we would change/ improve. In the coming weeks we will try and collate and present our ideas to share with Governors in the Spring Term. Any research at home will aid our thoughts for improvement.

Christmas Concert: we have had some very productive rehearsals this week...well done, so many of you know your words already. Now try to ensure you don't need your scripts at all and that you say your words clearly and at an appropriate volume!

This week we have been learning about-
Literacy- ee, ea and ire sounds. Letter writing.
Numeracy- Extracting information from block graphs and pictographs. Giving change. Matching money to price labels.
Knowledge and Undertanding. Different forces.
How to help your child at home-
Literacy- Finding words with sounds- ee, ea and ire.
Can you spell these words? Can you arrange them in alphabetical order? Can you find the word friction in a dictionary? What does it mean?
Numeracy- Counting in 2's starting at 3. What 2 numbers come after 93? Count in 10's starting from 5. What 3 numbers come after 95?
If you went to the shop and bought some oranges for 93p. Which coins could you use to pay for them? Is there another way of making 93p? If you only had a £1.00, how much change would you have? Repeat with other amounts.
Knowledge and Understanding- Identifying different forces in the home.

Year Three week ending 21st November

This week we have been learning about:

Maths: pictograms and the 3xtable
Literacy: poems and the tools the poet uses to describe places, objects etc
Discovery: Teeth

You can help at home by:

Maths: Go to the website below and experiment using the pictograms. Choose pictograms where the unit represents more than one.
Practise your three times table as often as you can - in the car, on walks, etc. practise counting forwards and backwards in 3s, then chanting the table in and out of order.
Literacy: Find a poem you really like and bring it in to school to read to the rest of the class. Think about why you like this poem. What is your favourite part? What techniques/ methods/ tools does the poet use? e.g. alliteration, similes, onomatopoeia, adjectives and adverbs. If you have time, have a go at learning your poem off by heart. I can't wait to hear your favourite poems!
Discovery: Your mind maps were brilliant last week. Each table has chosen a specific topic on teeth to research. Can you find any facts to add to your tables research. Will a diagram help?

Year 4 w/e 14.11.14

This week we have been-

Literacy- creating a storyboard trailer to summarise the main points of the story and seeing how the story might change if different characters acted in different ways etc.

Maths- collecting data and representing it as a pictogram as well as revisiting dividing

Topic- assembly practice which is coming on really well

You can help at home by-

Literacy- think about our story. We only know that Hannah and John have been invited to the shelter by Dr.Barnado. Think about what could happen next. Begin to plan the next part of the story, making sure you have relative language and actions e.g. Mud lark, gruel etc.

Maths- keep practising your timestables for our Big Maths tests and also dividing. The more you practice the better you'll become and understand it. We will be looking at long multiplication next week so have a go at that too and see if you can come up with different ways to work it out.

Topic- keep practising your lines for our assembly- a lot of you know them already, well done! Keep learning the song and your dance if you are dancing.

Year 6 week ending 14.11.14

This week we have been learning to:

Literacy - we have been delving deeper into the world of Macbeth, contrasting his character against that of Banquo and Lady Macbeth and writing conversations between Macbeth and Banquo. We have also written armistice day poems which were very emotive.

Numeracy - we have been concentrating on negative numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them. 

Science - we became sergeants in the Trellech police force, analysing forensic evidence to be able to write a report and hypothesis on what happened to a body.

How you can help at home:

Numeracy - use the following link to practice the work we have completed this week on adding and subtracting negative numbers.  This will give you a recap on how to add and subtract negative numbers and the you can try the questions at the bottom in the green box, entitled "your turn".

Talking homework - next week we will be writing letters to Monmouthshire County Council highways department about the safety of pedestrians in Trellech.  Think about the difficulties pedestrians face in Trellech and solutions you would like to see the highways department put into place.

Christmas play - please continue to learn your words, in particular knowing when you speak and who is speaking before you.

Activities to try at home

RWInc - please continue to learn and reinforce sounds, especially handwriting the sounds. Try and use a pencil and lined paper if possible and ask your child to write different sounds using the correct rhyme. When encouraging your child to write their name remind them it always starts with a capital letter with the rest being lower case letters. We have been having a go at this in school too.

Maths - ask your child about the number 5. Find 5 objects such as cars or small teddy bears. Use the objects to tell the number stories of 5. Start with 5 and ask how many more we need to make 5. The answer is 0. Some children also started to write the sums down using the + and the = sign so 5 + 0 = 5. Move one object away so you have 4 in one group and 1 in another group, ask your child to tell you the number story 4 add 1 makes 5. Encourage your child to write down the sum. Continue until your child is confident saying and writing the number stories of 5. When telling the stories we used the words add or plus for + and makes or equals for =.

Literacy - you will be happy to know that Jess the Cat returned home last night. We started to think about the adventures Jess might have been on whilst away and we thought it might be fun to come up with some of our own ideas we could use in our writing next week. Maybe you could have a think about this at home together and share your ideas in school.

The children looked great today all dressed as their heroes for children in need and we had a great morning with BusyBodies eating cakes and jam sandwiches. Thank you.

How to help your child at home-

Mathematical Development-

Have a look at the following link which shows some examples of what a Carroll diagram is. (Used for sorting and grouping.) We used them this week to sort shapes, patterns, numbers etc. All children used two boxes where they just use one criteria, some children went on to use a four box diagram where they had to use more than one criteria to sort. So for example, one criteria- is the number odd or oven? Two criteria- is it odd or even and is it bigger than 10 or smaller than 10?

There are some examples to do interactively or you could draw out your own diagram and ask them to sort objects at home. Criteria could be colours, shapes, food, numbers etc.

Knowledge and Understanding –

We carried out an investigation this week where we timed how many different activities we could do in a minute, e.g. shuttle runs, star jumps, sit ups etc. The children then explored what happened to their bodies after this exercise. Talk about what they discovered.

Next week I want to start them off on a project using PowerPoint on the laptops to create and present to the class a simple slideshow. This could be about a sport,a hobby, topic of interest, a country, themselves, an animal etc. Have a think about what they would like to do. If you have Powepoint at home, perhaps you could have a little look.

This week we have been learning about-
Numeracy- Finding different money amounts. Collect and record data.
Literacy- ire sound as in fire. Diary entry.
Knowledge and Understanding- Remembrance Day.
How to help your child at home. 
Numeracy- Finding the least amount of coins to pay for items that cost-  56p  64p  36p  98p  87p.
Using these amounts- 10p  12p  45p  23p  59p  12p  2p  3p  5p. If you only have 50p to spend what amounts could you use? Would you get any change?
Literacy- Spell these words- inspire, hire, conspire and fire. Use these words in sentences.
Knowledge and Understanding- Forces. Make a list of push and pull forces that can be found in the home. For eg- pull the curtains, push the light switch etc.

Year Three week ending 14th November

This week we have been learning:

Literacy: To create a story map. Using 'Leon and the Place Between" we have created a story map, sequencing the main events and adding detail such as interesting descriptive words and words to describe Leon's feelings. Using your home reader, create a story map. Remember our success criteria and see how successful you can be!

Maths: In maths, we have been adding and subtracting near multiples of 10. e.g. 356 + 21= 356 + 20 +1. Have a go at the sums below. Make sure you add or subtract the multiple first and then adjust.

Science: This week we have started to create a mind map about teeth. We have looked at how to create mind maps, focusing on how subtopics branch off from the main topic title. Using your knowledge about the body, create a mind map. Remember all the work you have covered on the skeleton, bones, organs and keeping healthy. You might find it easier to use an A3 piece of paper rather than your homework log.

Year Four Science: Week Ending~ 14th November 2014

This week we looked at the different parts of the tooth.....finding out that the tooth has 3 different layers and the role of the root and the crown of the tooth. We discussed what may happen when we 'knock' our tooth and how we care for our teeth and gums.

At home consider foods that are good or bad for our teeth. What happens when we eat sugary food? How can we keep our teeth healthy?
Suggest what might happen to each layer of our tooth if we didn't brush them appropriately. Why do we use toothpaste?

This week we have been learning

Have a go at home with these activities

RWInc - continue to learn the sounds, read and spell the words sent home in the yellow sound folders. We always go through the sounds each day, saying them and writing them together. We are also writing our names using the correct letter formation. Encourage your child to write their name when possible at home, remind them to think about forming the letters correctly. When reading the green words we have been trying to 'Fred in our head' so we think of the sounds and then say the word out loud. When your child is confident blending the word ask them to have a go at 'Fred in your head'. Use the word sheets sent home in the yellow folders.

Maths - using numbers initially to 5 ask your child to tell you one more than the number given. Some children used cube towers to help with this. When your child is confident then you could go to 10. We also had a go at saying 1 less than the number. Write the numbers between 1 and 9 on a piece of paper then see if your child can write 1 more than and 1 less than independently.

K&U - look around your house and identify different materials including wood, plastic, fabric, glass etc. Make a list or draw pictures of items made from the different materials. Maybe you could discuss why things are made from certain materials eg. windows are made from glass because you can see through it.

How to help your child at home-

Mathematical Development-

We recapped doubling numbers from before half term and found that doubling means the same as adding the same number again or some children looked at using x2. Try doubling some numbers, start low and work up. Rather than just asking what the answer is, try changing it so you give them a number and they have to tell you what number has been doubled to give you that answer.

Then talk about halving, we knew the answer would always be smaller than the original number. We used lots of vocabulary to do with division, such as sharing and split into. We used the ½ symbol as well. We did lots of work with odd and even numbers and discovered that we can only half even numbers into equal groups. Practise counting in twos on the even numbers and the odd…2, 4, 6, 8 and then 1, 3, 5, 7.  

Have a look at or

Talk about the days of the week and what you may do on each day. Ask lots of questions such as 'what was the day yesterday? Or what day will it be tomorrow?' Try writing them on bits of card/paper and ask them to order them, then mix two up and see if they can see which ones are mixed/missing etc.

Do the same with the months of the year, talk about birthdays, seasons etc. They found months a bit harder.

Knowledge and Understanding –

Get them to tell you all about Guy Fawkes and his plot against the King, they really enjoyed this story.

We talked about movement, and how pushes and pulls are needed to make things move/work. We used the word 'force' to describe the movement. We looked at objects require a push/pull to move, we also explored how a different 'strength' push or pull will make an object move further/shorter distance.

Have a look around your house or when you are out over the weekend at where push and pulls are used, for example, pushing trolleys or prams, pulling doors, pushing light switches, pulling a comb through your hair, pushing toy cars. Talk about twists and turns, e.g. on switches or toys.

Year 4 w/e 7.11.14

This week we have been-

Literacy- predicting what might happen in a story and thinking about how each character may feel

Numeracy- multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 and dividing

Topic- we have started to look at our class assembly on Ghana and Wales

You can help at home by-

Literacy- using VCOP see if you can produce as many different sentences with an element of each of the VCOP in. Make it as interesting as possible. Have a go at using this to write a sentence about Hannah or John or Mr. Patch and their feelings or reactions.

Numeracy- keep practising your dividing. We will have another look at this next week but have a go to keep it fresh in your head. If you find 2 numbers easy enough try with 3 numbers. Again our learn its and clic test scores have improved significantly- so please please keep at it!

Topic- keep learning the words to our song for our assembly. If you have chosen to do the Ghana or Wales dance then see if you can remember the moves and practice at home.

This week we have been learning about-
Literacy- Sounds ew (Chew the stew) and oa (Goat in a boat).
Retelling the story of Rama and Sita (Hindu story).
Firework poems.
Numeracy- Number bonds to 20. Finding the missing number.
Knowledge and Understanding- Creating a table chart to record data. Analysing data.
How to help your child at home-
Literacy- Spelling words with sounds ew and oa. Writing sentences with these sounds.
Numeracy- 12+----- =20        14+........ =20    etc.     ............+4= 20     ..........+ 7 = 20
Knowledge and Understanding- Finding a few facts about Remembrance Day. Why are poppies significant?
Also we are going to conduct a research as to how we can improve our school space. What could we do to change things for the better. If we had an extension, what would we put there? Could we have some different areas. Think about inside and out. Bring your ideas in so we can display them.

Year 3 week ending 7th November

This week we have been learning:

Literacy: We have started a new book called Leon and the Place Between, we have looked at apostrophes and when to use them and we have practised spellings with the ' ow' (o-e, ow, oa, o) sound.
Maths: We have been recognising multiples of 2,3,4,5 and 10.
Discovery: We have started looking at the food groups; how each group helps to keep our body healthy.

How you can help at home:
Literacy: Go to the following link and click on "Lexis the Magician' who will remind you of one occasion when you need to use apostrophes. Then click on "Contraction Match" to play a game using apostrophes.
Maths: Roll a dice twice to make a 2 digit number. Then decide whether it is a multiple 2,5 or 10. Don't forget the Venn diagram we drew - it could be a multiple of more than one number.
Extension - Once you feel comfortable with 2,5 and 10 try to make numbers that are multiples of 3 or 4.
Discovery: Make a list of all the food you eat in one day. Can you say which food groups they go into? Did you mostly eat Carbohydrate and Fruit and Vegetables? Was they a food group you didn't eat from? Why should you eat from each food group? Using the link below have a go at making a healthy lunchbox.

Year Six~Week Ending: 7th November 2014

This week we have been:

Geography: comparing the natural and human features in Ghana. At home find some appropriate sized images to add to your bubble maps that we will complete next week.

Literacy: we have begun to look at our new text for this half term. We were very enthusiastic when we were connecting the images to work out the text we will be studying! We were able to link the interesting images to Macbeth. At home look at other texts by William Shakespeare. What do we know about William Shakespeare? Are his text similar in anyway?

Maths: we have been producing Pie Charts. Use your skills from this week to create your own; using your own data. Can you use ICT to produce pie charts to represent your own sets of data?

Welsh: we have been editing the descriptions of ourselves to include the first person, third person and past tense. We have been saying these orally in readiness for recording. Now try to research a famous person that you could apply the same organisation to describe them as if you were that person.

Talking Homework: We will write a postcard/ letter as if we were a soldier during World War I. Consider how you are feeling being away from family and friends on the Battlefields. Consider your emotions, the sights, sounds and smells you might experience. How much of reality would you share in a communication home to loved ones?

Please ensure you continue to learn your words for the Christmas production, we will begin rehearsals next week. Once you know your lines, please try to ensure they are spoken with appropriate volume and clarity.....we all want to hear them!

This week we have enjoyed researching the names and purpose of our teeth. We knew quite alot about our teeth but we weren't sure about the names and the 'job' they each do. We found it interesting to find out the number of teeth we have as children and how many we will have as adults. Some children found out abut the enamel that protects our teeth and how cavities need to be treated. 

At home can you design a poster to promote the importance of cleaning our teeth to prevent cavities and our adult teeth 'falling out'.
