Year 4 Home Learning- Miss Morris and Mrs Phillips W/E 28.6.19

In Maths- Times Tables, tally charts, pictograms and line graphs.

Have a look at- https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/topics/z7rcwmn

In science, we talked about the words Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We brainstormed what we understand about these terms and thought about what we can do to help in our own lives towards each one. The children were amazing with what they came up with and next week are going to make a pledge as to what they will try do now to help our planet.

Discuss their understanding of each term and what ideas can be done to achieve them. For example- to reduce- they can try not to use so much water when brushing their teeth, reuse a bag when shopping and recycle paper we use.

Humanities- Over the last few weeks we have been looking at a number of different world issues- such as

Global warming(e.g ice caps melting), deforestation, water pollution, air pollution, food and water security and sustainability.

At home can they do some more research about one or more of these ideas and bring any ideas into class on Tuesday where we can share the ideas.

There are still a few outstanding library permission slips, please could I ask they are returned on Tuesday.

Hope you have had a lovely weekend,

Miss Morris and Mrs Phillips

Home learning Dosbarth Mr Green

Dosbarth Mr Green

Week Commencing 24/6/19

Literacy: Learn the spellings that will be written in Homework books by finding their meanings if necessary and writing them in a sentence.  Your child will be tested a week  Friday.

Numeracy: This week we have been working on multiplying and dividing. Worksheets will be sent home over the next couple of weeks to reinforce what we have covered.

Knowing and being familiar with the times tables really help here so please continue with the work on them.

Next Week

We will be writing alternative versions of fairy tales so it would be great if your child could look at some traditional fairy stories to compare and write their own versions.

Presentations – Next week pupils will be presenting information on a topic that interests them. Therefore research can be carried out to orally present to the class. They only need to be between 5 and 10 minutes and if possible can be enhanced with ICT, objects, photographs or pictures.

Year 1

Good afternoon,

We have been looking at subtraction sums these past couple of weeks and counting back/on using number lines. Taking this forward the children can create their own giant number lines or hop scotch using paint or chalk. Rolling a die they could then hop back or forward depending if they are adding or taking away. If you like you could turn it into a competitive game. One player adds and the other subtracts, they start at the opposite end of the number line and take turns rolling some dice.

In English we have been looking at describing characters using adjectives and in our next big write we shall create the sequel to our back to earth book we have been reading.

In topic the children have researched their own space facts and looked at what humans need to survive in space.

In music the children looked at a song that had a class members name in it. They then tried coming up with their own songs that had their name in the lyrics. Feel free to encourage children to invent some songs in the musical style of their choice at home and if they want they can perform the song at show and tell.

Next week year 1 shall have a helper from the comprehensive school who is joining us on work experience. As you know the new sports day shall also be held on Friday and as such there will be no big write.

All the best from the year 1 team.

Year 4 Home Learning- Miss Morris and Mrs Phillips W/E 14.6.19

Maths- Money and money problems. Looking at what coins we would use to make a certain amount-

Try 37p, 88p, £1.43, £4. 95 etc.

We added up amounts of money and looked at calculating change from different amounts. Try practising some column additions with money, for example £1.36+££4.25+£5.99= etc What coins could you use to pay?

If you are out and about and pay with cash and require change, could they work it out for you? Either mentally or written? We used column subtraction to help. E.g

  £5.95

 -£3.40

As a sum that involves no 'borrowing' and then,

   £2.00

  -£0.40

Where you need to borrow from next column.

Literacy- In Language and Literacy we carried on with our work on the story Sugarcane Juice. The story is about a young boy called Hamid, who works for his father, selling sugarcane juice at a stall in a busy bus station in Pakistan. We focused in on settings this week and un-picked a description of the setting of the bus station and inside the bus, using headings such as sounds, smells, movement, colours and people.

Next week we are focusing on planning questions to ask Hamid, what would you want to ask?

We began our science topic of waste and recycling. We looked at some vocabulary associated with waste, such as landfill, packaging, recycling, bins, compost, fly-tipping, litter.  Could you discuss these at home and if they are positive or negative for our environment?

Next week we will be looking at what materials are currently recycled and how/where they are recycled. Discuss your current recycling habits.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Morris and Mrs Phillips

Year 1

Good afternoon,

In this week we have looked at the order of the planets, tested objects buoyancy and density plus seen how water behaves in space.

We did not do big write this Friday but instead completed a couple of science experiments on water.

We have looked at measuring capacity this week using non-standard measures (they measured in yogurt pots or other random containers) and as a homework activity it would be useful to expand this by mixing a children’s punch and getting them to measure in litres and millilitres. https://en.petitchef.com/recipes/magical-color-changing-drinks-fid-1112172. The previous link goes to a recipe page for ideas on mocktails for children. I recommend the colour changing recipe as you could get them to come up with some space drinks.

I look forward to speaking with you all on parent’s evening,
