Year 2 Friday 1 May 2020

We have made it another week and already into May! How time flies!

Literacy
To write from the point of view of a character
Big Write for today is to write from the point of view of a character. Choose your favourite book or story, one that you know lots about. I want you to imagine you are one of the characters- you may choose your favourite character. Re-write part the story as if your character was telling the narrator. Think carefully about how your character would feel/ react at different points of the story. Would the story be the same? You may decide to add some of your own ideas to make it more imaginative. Remember it is first person- I but you will you use third person for the other characters. You may also want to think about the tenses you use.

Bronze- re-write a paragraph from your favourite story as if your favourite character was telling the story. Include how you feel.
Silver- re-write a chapter from your favourite story as if your favourite character was telling the story. Include how you feel and what you're thinking inside your head.
Gold- re-write you favourite story as if your favourite character was telling the story. include how you feel, what you are thinking inside your head, think about your reactions to things as well.

Maths
Friday's Maths consist of our online Learn its and Clic tests, however I will be adding paper versions onto the Y2 shared folder on HWB instead
Clic tests- the children should have no more than 10-15 minutes maximum to complete these. They can do workings out if need be on the sheet or on a separate sheet. Just a reminder- question 1 is for them to partition the number- so what is the value of each? e.g 36- 3=30 6=6. A lot of the children assume it is halving the number because of the way it is laid out!
Learn its- these are timed at 30 seconds. The children are used to this so please ensure it is only 30 seconds! The learn its are to develop their quick recall and the sums given are the number facts that the children should be confident with to answer rapidly.
SAFE- the children haven't yet completed these but they involve other maths covered in school aside from basic number. The children have covered these areas so should be able to answer some. Again I would say no more than 10-15 minutes. I would now try to reduce this time to 5-10 minutes

Bronze- Clic 1/ Learn its 1 / SAFE 1
Silver- Clic 2/ Learn its 2/ SAFE 2
Gold- Clic 3/ Learn its 3/ SAFE 3

You are of course welcome to complete all of these challenges if you wish!

Spellings
Below are your new spellings to practice throughout the week. Your child knows which colour they are. Remember to get tested before your new words again next Friday. When you practise your spellings, use what you know from school-

Look, say, cover, write, check
Spellamadoodle- draw a squiggly line and write each of your spellings along the line
Pyramids- build a pyramid starting with the first letter, adding a letter each time e.g. then
t
th
the
then
Sentences- write sentences including your spelling word

Remember if you aren't sure what the word means- use a dictionary to help you
I have also added onto the Y2 shared folder on HWB, the list of High Frequency words that the children should be familiar with, or increasingly familiar with for reading and spelling. This is something you should also look at throughout this time and even add in to the spelling lists if you wish. I have also added the Y3/4 high frequency words list to the folder, it is not expected that your child can read and write every one of these words, but if they are mostly confident with the Y2 ones then please move onto this list.

Topic
To find out about a woodland animal
This is also carried over from yesterday. Think about all of the different animals and creatures and bugs you might find in the woodland areas. Make a list so you have these safe for another time- incase we may need it! I want you to choose one to research/ find more about. What information can you find out about that animal?Any interesting facts? Why did you choose that animal? There might be some questions you want to ask that animal. Draw or paint a picture of that animal and present your research/ information however you like- it maybe on the same page like a poster/ it maybe on separate pages/ it maybe on the computer/ it maybe post it notes/ it maybe a video of you talking about it.

Don't forget PE with Joe Wickes each morning from 9am. If you have completed the above topic work or wish to do some other things, why not complete 2-3 of Joe Wickes' work outs.

Have a lovely weekend

Reception Home Learing 30.4.20

Reception Class Thursday 30th April

To the Parents and children of Reception Class.

I just want to tell you something as I'm sat here doing my online blog- Virtual teaching will never replace the love, the laughs, the learning, the smiles on the children's faces, the aha moments (which are many),that happen in the classroom every single day. This quarantine isn't a break from teaching, its heartbreak.

Anyway, let's get back to some serious learning!

Literacy

All groups recap the new sounds/words we have learnt this week. But don't forget to add some recap sounds/words. Please feel free to create lotto/bingo games. Something that might be fun as I think it's going to rain today. Perhaps hide some words and they have to find them and match them to a lotto board. But remember to say the word they have found.

On your daily walk or even out in the garden, see if you can find some wiggly worms, sparkly spider webs, slimy snails, colourful ladybirds etc. Please can you encourage your child to extend their vocabulary to describe what they are doing and where they might be going? Perhaps if you have a magnifying glass, you can look closely at what you find? Can you find snails with different patterned shells? Can you draw some of the things you have found and write the initial sound for each minibeast?

Numeracy

Number bonds

Continue to count to 30 and beyond, and Keep doubles on the boil up to 10.

All Children-Make some F/C with number bonds to 6 on. For eg. 3+3=6 etc. Then encourage your child to find objects to match the sum.

Most Children-As above but use number bonds to 10.

Challenge- This time if you make the sums using objects, but your child makes the corresponding sum.

Creative

I saw this yesterday and thought it was a lovely idea. You can use twigs or just paint to make a rainbow. (Painted twigs look lovely). Then at the bottom write your child's name with Lockdown 2020. Then frame it as a keepsake. If you use twigs, you will have to get a frame with some depth to it. I'm sure you know what I mean. I am definitely going to do this.

Yoga

Warrior

I am strong in body, heart and mind- Jump your feet apart.

I support myself-Turn your left foot in and your right foot forward.

I am ready to act- Raise your arms.

I am trustworthy- Turn your head to the right and bend your right knee.

How can you support yourself in feeling strong in body, heart and mind?

Singing

How is the singing going? (Somewhere over the Rainbow).

Weekly Welsh

Beth wyt ti'n hoffi (What do you like?).

Answer- Rwy'n hoffi (I like…). Or

Dw i ddim yn hoffi (I don't like).

Use words-

siocled-chocolate

oren-orange

afal-apple

bisged-biscuit

You can also use the welsh phrases but use English words that you like or dislike. For eg. Rwy'n hoffi…..sprouts.

My email address is- MilesD8@hwbmail.net if you need to contact me.

Thank you and keep yourselves safe.

Mrs Miles

 "Sometimes," said the horse.

"Sometimes what?" asked the boy.

"Sometimes just getting up and carrying on is brave and magnificent."

Today's activities are ready for 9.00 over on our Google Classroom.

Literacy- finishing off final report on your planet/trying a different way to present the information.

Maths- A subtraction game to play with someone at home- if you can't print it off, just copy it out onto paper and cut up.

You will see something also called 'High Frequency Spelling List.' This is the list of spellings we used for your reading diaries each week, so see the instructions for what we would you to do with them. Perhaps dig out your diaries to see what ones you haven't done.

Don't forget to look at Monday's Topic activities too and see what you still need to do and what you can achieve today.

Have a good day,
Mrs Maunder and Mrs Phillips

Year 2 Thursday 30th April 2020

Literacy
Taken from BBC Bitesize- lesson of the 29th April.
To create a factfile about mini beasts using connectives
Recap what connectives are first of all- they join sentences together e.g. and/ because/so etc
Watch the video about mini beasts and complete the activities to go with it.

Bronze-

How many different minibeasts did you see in the video?  Write some short sentences saying which minibeasts you saw. See if you can write six sentences like these.

  • I saw a snail.
  • I saw a spider.

Once you've listed them. Try using the word 'and' to join sentences together. For example:

  • I saw a snail and a spider.

Silver
  • Get a piece of paper and fold it in to four quarters (ask someone to help you if needed).
  • Choose three minibeasts from the video and give each one a name.
  • Then write a sentence about each one making sure you use joining words to link ideas together.

For example

  • Sally the snail has a soft body and a hard shell because it protects her.

Gold-

Draw six big squares on a piece of paper and then cut out each square. On one side write the name of a minibeast (you can draw it too). Then on the other side write a sentence about that minibeast. Make sure you use joining words to include more detail. For example: I can move really quickly because I have eight legs.  Once you've done six, test the people around you to see how many they can guess.

You may also wish to create a more 'traditional' fact file of a mini beast of your choice using the features discussed previously e.g. subtitles/ picture with caption/ facts/title

Maths

To compare amounts of money.

You may wish to use real coins for this so the children can have a real life experience. The activities involving adding various amounts and working out which amount is greatest using the crocodile bites < > we have covered this before but they might need reminding. The greedy crocodile always likes to eat the biggest amount so his mouth is wide open e.g. 10 > 4

Bronze- complete pages 1 and 2 on this link. If confident have a go at further pages. https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zrqjqp3/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzjxmxyc&intlink_ts=1588168437309-sa

Silver/ Gold- to compare amounts of money for greater than and less than using crocodile bites < >  there are different levels within this activity. https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zrqjqp3/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzjxmxyc&intlink_ts=1588168200943-sa

Silver/ Gold- This activity involves more problem solving/ true false work which is also handy to look at and have a go- https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/z7snscw/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzjxmxyc&intlink_ts=1588168283371-sac

Just a little reminder....

Enjoy.
Mrs. Hassall

Year One - Thursday 30th April

The weather has become a little bit more unsettled ,but  make sure you still manage to get outside in the garden and have some fresh air. I can see from the work you have been sharing that you have been doing lots of lovely things. I am really enjoying seeing your work, it does make me smile.

RWInc will continue to have live lessons via YouTube so they will help us keep our 'sounds on the boil' whilst we are at home.  These will take place daily and can be located via the following link:

Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30 am and again at 12.30 pm

Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00 am and again at 1.00 pm

Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30 am and again at 1.30 pm

Note: films won't be available at other times

They also have Poetry Time on Youtube at 2pm each day, they are also available afterwards.

Literacy:

Today we are going to access the  resources on the BBCBitesize Home Learning website. We will focus on the Fact file activity today. The focus will be to include nouns and verbs.

It can be found via:

Watch the video to remind yourself about what a verb is.

When writing sentences you can use the word 'and' to join sentences together.

For example: 'I went swimming. I saw my friends.' could become 'I went swimming and I saw my friends.'

Watch the clip on minibeasts or have a look in your own gardens on a minibeast hunt,  then try one of the following activities:

Bronze: Let's make a list

How many different minibeasts did you see in the video?

Write some short sentences saying which minibeasts you saw. Write as many as you can like this:

  • I saw a snail.

  • I saw a spider.

Once you've listed as many as you can, try using the word 'and' to join sentences them together. For example:

  • I saw a snail and a spider.

Silver: Making a fact file

  • Get a piece of paper and fold it in to four quarters (ask someone to help you if needed).

  • Choose three minibeasts from the video and give each one a name.

  • Now write a sentence about each one making sure you use the word 'and' to link ideas together. For example: Sally the snail has a soft body and a hard shell to protect her.

Gold : Let's make a game

Draw six big squares on a piece of paper and then cut out each square.

On one side write the name of a minibeast (or draw a picture of it). Then on the other side write a sentence about that minibeast. Try using the word 'and' to include more details. For example: I have a small body and I have eight legs.

Once you've done six, test the people around you to see how many they can guess.

This can be done in your homelearning book or using J2easy (whichever is easiest for you).

Numeracy:

Today please find in the Year 1 Hwb Class folder a resource helping us find half

This does not need to be printed out and stuck in your book, only if wish/ are able to.
To challenge yourself try and double objects from around the home or garden.

Bronze: Halve 1 digit numbers

Silver: Halve 2 digit numbers up to 20

Gold: Halve 2 digit numbers beyond 20. Can you Halve a 3 digit number?

Challenge

Health & Well Being:

Today is our PE lesson so start with Joe Wicks (@thebodycoach)  at 9.am  on YouTube. A great way to start the day for all the family.  I've also seen some of you completing the Daily Mile with your family, another great way to start the day with your family!

Sport Wales have included some of their resources that we normally use in school for you at home. Have a go at the first activity and let me know how you get on:

Today is Captain Tom Moore's 100th Birthday. You may have seen that he raised lots of money for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden.

Take a moment to challenge yourself to do something 100 times in honour of his birthday...can you jump 100 times, skip, hop, clap or be inventive than me!

Design a card for Captain Tom Moore to celebrate his 100th Birthday. Write a special message to him!

Sing happy birthday to him in Welsh!

Do some birthday baking!

I've also included in the class file a Reading Activity about Captain Tom Moore, some birthday card templates and some thankyou colouring if you wish to complete them. Send them or pop them in your J2easy folder.
