Year 2 Tuesday 31 March 2020

Literacy
To plan and create a comic strip
Your Literacy is carrying on from yesterday. First of all, what is a comic strip? How is it different to a book or fact file or poem? Look at some examples- there are a couple below. What do you notice? Caption boxes to explain briefly what is going on or where or when the scene is taking place, speech bubbles- characters talking to each other,  thought bubbles- what the characters are thinking and they are mostly pictures rather than writing. You usually find comics are rather funny or silly and colourful.
It is important that you plan your ideas first so that you know how your comic strip/page will look and be about. It will make it easier and more enjoyable for you too.
Plan what you want your comic to be about first. You may decide to turn your favourite story into a comic or you may decide to make up your own story. What characters will you include? What will the setting be? How many boxes will you have? When completing your comic, have a think how you want to set it out- landscape or portrait? Will you have different sized boxes? Will your caption boxes be in the same place each time? Don't forget to make it colourful. If you have finished this you could turn it into an animation.

Bronze- create a 4 box comic strip including 2 characters and speech
Silver- turn your favourite chapter into a comic or if creating your own story then aim for 6-8 boxes including at least 2 characters, speech and captions
Gold- turn you favourite book into a comic or if creating your own story then aim for 10 boxes including at least 2 characters, speech, captions and thought bubbles.

Maths
To create a bar chart
Yesterday you interpreted bar graphs and became familiar with how they look and how the information is represented. Using your data you collected from your pictogram, or choosing new data if you wish- remember to create a tally chart first, turn that data into a bar graph. Below is a link to help you with constructing a bar graph as well as some graph paper on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB to help you. You must use a ruler and pencil when drawing your graph and bars. You may also wish to complete the table and bar graph on J2Data on HWB too. I would like you all to have a go at drawing one by hand please as well. Remember your graphs need the axis labelled- x axis across bottom- what the data is e..g favourite colour/ food etc and the y axis up the side are the numbers of people. Graphs also need titles so we know what data they are representing e.g. A graph to show the favourite colours in my family etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22FL5q5WYMA

Bronze- create your bar graph for your 1 set of data collected
Silver- create your bar graph for your 2 sets of data collected. Remember to label your axis
Gold- create your bar graph for your 3 sets of data collected. Remember to label your axis and give it a title

Topic
To understand there layers of the Rainforest
You are carrying on your work from yesterday. What type of climate is in the rainforest? What do you think it is like? Dry? Wet? Hot? Cold? What sort of animals live there? Where are rainforests found? You may like to have a look at some of the places where they are found including the names of them. There is a powerpoint on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB. Look through this to find out more about the different layers and what happens in each layer. I would like this to be done over 2 days as I feel it is the right amount of time for looking at and understanding the rainforest in more detail and to complete the activity. It is entirely up to you how you complete the work wether by hand through drawing/ diagrams/ poster or by computer or you may even choose to turn it crafty and make a 3D/ paint the tree/ rainforest. if you have completed this, you may try to represent it in a different way? A video/ animation/ powerpoint etc.

Bronze- write a sentence for each of the different layers and what happens there using the powerpoint to help you
Silver- create a poster/ drawing/ diagram of the rainforest showing each of the layers and what happens in each layer including animals that live there. You may use the powerpoint to help you
Gold- create a poster/ drawing/ diagram of the rainforest showing each of the layers and what happens in each layer including animals that live there. Use your own words to describe the layers.

Daily Welsh
To ask and answer questions
Spend approx 10 minutes a day using your conversation work from Friday, or if you didn't get chance to complete it then using the word bank on the  Year 2 shared folder on HWB to help you. With a family member, ask and answer the questions varying your replies, become more confident with the questions and their meaning and how to answer them. You could even add in the weather!

Enjoy

Year 6 Monday 30th March 2020

Good morning Year 6, I hope you are all keeping safe and well.
You
Today I have ready for you your home learning activities which will be ready on google classroom at 9am.

Literacy - to design a new Easter product
Numeracy - solving time problems using the 24hr clock
Topic - to understand evaporation and condensation

Also remember to get some daily exercise, both Jo Wickes and Max Whitlock are providing daily activities specifically for children to keep active. If this is not possible try and spend some time in the garden to get some fresh air.

Parents, I have also been looking at apps to support well being in upper key stage 2 children, especially as they maybe on phones and social media more regularly. One app I have found is the BBC Own It app. You may want to take a look at see if it would be appropriate for use with your child. It is available on both android and iPhone. If anyone does use it I would really like to hear how it works.

Remember I'm available today from 9am via email to answer any questions you have or just to say hi. Remember I'm happy for you to complete as much work as you feel you are able to do and present in any format you find easiest.

Take care and stay safe.

Year 5 30.03.20

Oustanding work from you all last week - I've been really impressed with everything that's been submitted, as well as the extra things you have been sharing with me. You've taken to online learning so so well...keep it up!

I will continue to post tasks daily on Google Classroom, and full instructions will be given on each posted assignment. If for any reason the online documents don't work, or you would prefer to work offline some of the time, it is absolutely fine to complete a task on paper. You can always take a photo of what you've done and share this with me through a comment on the post, or via Hwb email.

Literacy - turning your story into a book

Maths - identifying 2D shapes and knowing their properties

Health and Well-being - create your own workout

Music - listen to and appraise music of different genres

Science - complete a WWF Earth Hour activity

Spellings are also uploaded today - remember to learn, and ask someone at home to test you at the end of the week.

I would like you to spend at least 10 minutes per day on j2blast to really become confident with your times tables - this can be practising, live challenges, or a mixture of both. It's great to see that lots of you have been on since last week, and I'll be interested to keep an eye on who's taking top spot on the leaderboard!

I hope you've all had a good weekend, and have been spending lots of time with family. Keep up the great work!

Year 3 Distance Learning Week 2

Monday, March 30th 2020

Good Morning. I hope everyone has had a good weekend and are fit and healthy.

Just a reminder how to carry out the work:

Bronze – all complete

Silver – additional challenge

Gold – high challenge

Literacy: HF words for this week – Copy out the following to learn for a test on Friday.

want, wanted, water, where, which, white, who, why, wish and window

L.O: To use speech marks

We have already looked at using speech marks or inverted commas this year but it's always good to go back over things. It is important to remember that speech marks only go around what is said.

For example: "Hello," said the shopkeeper. Or:  The shopkeeper said, "Hello."

I have also included a capital for the first word spoken and a comma inside the speech marks. Notice the full stop when I wrote the other way around. However, if I were to use a question or an exclamation they would look like this:

"Hello?" the shopkeeper asked nervously,

"Hello!" shouted the annoyed shopkeeper.

Use the Primary Resources English website link below:

http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/english/englishB6.htm

Then choose the 3 (in blue) Speech Marks Kate Lewin PowerPoint. Download the PPT and play from the beginning using: Enable Editing, Slideshow and From Beginning.  Work through the PPT and answer the questions by trying out on paper as a practice.

Then: Bronze Level – Write simple sentences including speech marks, a comma or question mark. Use my examples and the PPT to help (2 examples of comma, 2 of question mark)

Silver Level – Write simple sentences including speech marks, a comma, exclamation mark or question mark. Use my examples and the PPT to help (4 of comma, exclamation and question)

Gold Level – Write a dialogue between two people using new speaker, new line.

Also try the speaker before the speech as well as after

Numeracy:

Warm up: Practise your x4 & x8 tables. Remember if you can do your x4 then just double these answers for x8. Also log in to Hwb and then click on J2E and use the

TT Blast which is an interactive game to help with times tables speed. You can access this daily to improve on score and speed.

L.O: To use the column method for subtraction by partitioning (No carrying over).

Watch the first example on video via the link below to learn how to do this.

79 – 45 =

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n7kesMDCrs

Bronze Level –Carry out partitioning subtraction with numbers  less than 30

Silver  Level – Carry out partitioning subtraction with numbers between 50 and 100 (e.g. 99 – 43)

Gold  Level - Carry out partitioning subtraction with numbers between 50 and 200 (e.g. 168 – 113)

Daily Welsh: To learn the days of the week

Type in 'Translate English to Welsh' on the Google search engine. Then type in a day of the week in English. It will automatically change to Welsh. Click on the speaker icon and you can listen to the pronunciation.

Record these days in English and Welsh in your exercise books.

Bronze – practise the days of the week aloud

Silver – Practise the days of the week alongside words for 'today' and for ' yesterday' (You can put these into translate also)

Gold - Practise the days of the week alongside words for 'today' and for ' yesterday'. Also translate 'What day is it?' and practise saying. (You can put these into translate also)

Reception Home Learning 30.3.20

Reception Class Monday 30th March

To the Parents and children of Reception Class.

I hope the weekend has been kind to you and hopefully enjoying some time altogether. It was quite chilly, hopefully your child will able to tell you about the wuthering wind! Just a reminder that I'm just giving you some ideas to support your child. At any time you feel you can't cope with parenting, working and teaching, all at the same time, don't. Always choose laughing, snuggling and reminding them how loved and safe they are, rather than getting frustrated over school work. We are all in this together, this means mentally too.

If you do get chance to watch the live RWI sessions, as I do think they help you as a parent as to what we are trying to achieve.

Literacy

Mrs Garbett's group

ow sound- low snow blow crow

Today will be the ow (blow in the snow) sound. Make 4 words with ow sound. Get your child to identify the special friends (ow) and then blend and read the word. After a few recaps you can say the word for your child to write down. Do this with the 4 words and then 1 recap word (igh word). Mark together. Remember to use tall and short letters, (they are not all the same size). Tall letters should touch the top of the line and small letters half way. If you can see your child forming letters incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them. Dictate this sentence several times and then encourage your child to write it down- I will whisk my wand. Mark together and write out again if it needs to be corrected. If you can see your child forming letters incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them.

Mrs Evans group.

Ch- chop chin chat

Today will be the ch sound. Make 3 words with ch sound. Get your child to identify the special friends (ch) and then blend and read the word. After a few recaps you can say the word for your child to write down. Do this with the 3 words and then 1 recap qu word? Mark together. Remember to use tall and short letters, (they are not all the same size). Tall letters should touch the top of the line and small letters half way. If you can see your child forming letters

incorrectly, just practise a line of one of them. Dictate this sentence several times and then encourage your child to write it down- I sit on a hat and I sat on a pin. Mark together.

Mrs Miles group

Word Time 4- set let hen fan

Recap all initial sounds. This is really important. Say the words above in FRED TALK (say each syllable rather than say the word). Encourage your child to tell you what you have said. Only tell them the word if you have said it several times and they still don't know. Then dictate one word at a time and encourage your child to write it down. Mark together. Please support your child to form letters correctly with the handwriting sheet that they should have in their sound folders.

Numeracy.

Sorting/counting

Collect a few things from around the house. For eg. 6 toy cars, 2 dolls or figures, 4 pieces of fruit, 5 tins from the cupboard and 7 pieces of lego. In school, we usually use hoops, but perhaps have just 2 defined areas.

All Children-Count how many in each criterion. You can if you wish record the numbers as this will keep up with your number formation and counting.

Most-Order from smallest to largest/shortest to tallest. Are there any the same size?

Challenge-Encourage your child to decide what the criterion is. It could be food/toys. Metal/plastic. Small/big. Let them decide. This can be quite fascinating and they tend to come up with suggestions you probably haven't thought of.

Mindfulness. First thing in the morning if you can. The whole family, you all need this!

·         Sit mindfully, with your spine straight and body relaxed.

·         Notice your breathing. Take 3 soft, slow, mindful breaths and feel them in your body.

·         Breathe in and feel the air coming into your nose. Does it feel soft in your nostrils Breathe in and count 2.

·         Breathe in and notice air filling your lungs. Does your ribcage go out? Breathe out and count 3.

·         Breathe in and see the air expanding your middle. Does your tummy look round like a ball? Breathe out and count 4

·         Repeat for 2 more rounds of breathing into your nose, lungs and tummy. Breathe mindfully to feel awake and ready for the day.

Topic

If you can start to collect some junk as this might help in the next few weeks such as egg boxes, yoghurt cartons, some milk cartons, cereal boxes.

Touch, texture and counting.

This can be done indoors or out. It would be quite fun if you could do it on a walk. But be careful with your distance if you meet anyone. Use an old egg box or something similar that you can collect things. Whichever environment you use, collect different things. For eg. Leaves, stones, twigs, grass etc. How many of each category have you collected? How many colours? Have you got some things that are the same colour but a different shade? Can you name them? Which is your favourite? Why? How many altogether? Have you collected anything soft, hard, shiny, rough etc. talk about textures? You can still do this indoors, collecting things from around the house.

Welsh

Recap these language patterns-

Ble rwyt ti'n byw?   Where do you live?

Answer- Dw i'n bwy yn……….  I live in…….

My email address is- MilesD8@hwbmail.net if you need to contact me.

Thank you

Year 4 Monday 30th March

Year 4 w/c 30.3.20

A huge well done to everyone for what you have achieved in our first week of remote learning!

Numeracy

This week has a two part focus, the first half of the week concentrating on temperatures, scales and negative numbers and the second half on dividing by 10.  Just like last week, the instructions for each day will be attached to the activities on google classroom and will go live for you each morning.  For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday you will not be able to edit the google docs due to the way the pictures have had to be added so you can answer on either a new google docs or on paper.

We would like you to spend approximately 15 minutes a day using TT blast on hwb to get your times tables super speedy – I will be checking out your scores!

Friday maths will be the same as last week using the Big Maths tests.

Literacy

This week we are starting with a comprehension about Andy Goldsworthy.  The text and questions are on  google classroom for you and can be answered on either google docs or paper.

Topic

This week there are another 5 tasks set for you which can be completed in any order you'd like to.  For the music, you should all have received an email from me to your Hwb email.  We are trialling using the at home section of our school music subscription called Charanga.  The at home section is called "YUMU" and the email contains how to log in and your passwords.  Please contact me using my hwb email if you are having problems.

Spellings

These will be set on a Monday – learn them throughout the week and then get somebody at home to test you on a Friday.

Welsh for the week

Following on from the Welsh last week of pets (anifeiliaid anwes) we would like you to complete a pet questionnaire, asking as many friends and family as you can (this is a great opportunity for you to keep in touch with everyone!)  1 star is bronze, 2 stars is silver and three stars is gold.  They will be available on google classroom for you.

Stay safe and look after your families. Good luck and happy remote learning.

Year 1-Monday 30th March

From feedback from parents it has become apparent that due to other pressures it is very challenging to access all the learning that is being put online. First of all your well being and the wellbeing of your child comes first. Please do not stress. We as teachers need to set a minimum amount of work but as parents you know your situation and child best so do not feel that you should be completing all the activities, all of the time.

To simplify to a certain extent I will not set daily activities on a Monday, rather see Monday as you introducing the weekly activities to your child, who should then be able to complete them independently the rest of the week, with support from siblings if available.

Weekly Activities

English-Spellings/Speed sound lessons

Please carry on with the spelling activities.

To reinforce the spelling activities it would be useful to alternate the spelling activities with RWI sound lessons that are available on Facebook or YouTube. This link provides more information. https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/. Most learners in year 1 are starting to access set 3. A few learners are on Set 2.

Bronze-Set 1

Gold- turn you favourite book into a comic or if creating your own story then aim for 10 boxes including at least 2 characters, speech, captions and thought bubbles.

Maths
To interpret data
Last week you interpreted and collected data linking to pictograms. Refresh your memory about pictograms and tally charts. What did a tally do? What did the 'frequency' section mean in the table? How many lines to make a tally? What do the pictures do? You are going to look at bar graphs this week. They do the same job as a pictogram- they represent data except this time not as a picture but as a bar. Talk about the axis- the x axis along the bottom tells us what data is being collected e.g. favourite colour/ pet/ food and the y axis- the axis going up the side tells us the number of people who chose the data options. Activities are on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB.

Bronze- complete the Easter data activity
Silver- complete the favourite colour activity
Gold- complete the favourite colour activity and also the Smartie activity ( if you don't have smarties or any form of coloured treats/ use with counters or items around the house)
