Topic

Rationing food during the war.

A typical ration for 1 adult was 50g of butter, 50g cheese, tea 50g and 3 pints of milk. (There was a bit more but the numbers were too big). Can you support your child to weigh some of the ingredients and look carefully at the scales? Maybe make some cakes ready for a garden party on Friday.

Creative

Continue from yesterday. I would love to see your finished creations.

Make a hat to wear on VE Day out of newspaper. See instructions on https://bletchleypark.org.uk

Yoga

Bumblebee

Bees hum their day's away, visiting flowers and making honey. As you hum, think of what makes you happy!

Wherever you are-----walking, working, playing or resting, breathe in fully and as you breathe out, hum like a bee.

Make sure your face and lips are soft so you can feel the vibration.

Repeat for as long as you like and experiment humming from high to low, notice the differences.

Weekly Welsh

Following on from last week-Think about the foods you would like to eat to celebrate VE Day.

Beth wyt ti'n hoffi? (What would you like?).

Tuesday year 1 homelearning

Topic-exploring the different types of plate movement.

Bronze. Try to recreate the 3 main types of plate movement. You can use shaving foam or custard to be the mantle/magma and biscuits to be the plate tectonics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smouixj44iI gives a very simple video demonstration. Note it might be easier to use clay/playdough to demonstrate how collision creates mountains.

Silver. Use this interactive activity to explore which areas have different types of movement https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/earth/plates-on-the-move2/game. Can you find 1 example of each and what happens in this area?

Gold. There is 1 other type of plate tectonic movement that I did not mention. Can you find out what that is and what happens when this occurs

Maths Counting in 5s continued.

We will be using this BBC bitesize activity. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhfjqp3. To do some counting in 5 problems.

Bronze. Complete activity 1, counting in 5s practically.

Silver.  Complete activity 2. Watching the videos will help and you can remind them that there are 5 balls in a tube so they have 7 groups of 5...They could use practical objects to help.

Gold. Introduce them to tally charts and they can use tallying to help count and keep track of activity 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adaIPOILm88

English-Positional words.

Roald Dahl would often have a "story map" to help him picture where everything takes place in his story. Once he had this picture in his head he found it easier to create an exciting story. We are going to work backwards. We are going to try and extract all the positional words we can find In a section of Fantastic Mr Fox and see if we can create a map of what that world would look like. A positional word is a word like under or above that tells us where something is located. We will also need to include nouns of notable places. So hole, fence, waterfall would be words that will help us draw a map.

Bronze. Read through the extract and find as many positional words as you can. Alternatively have someone else read the extract and you identify the word. Also include any place names or objects like tree or house. (Extract is saved in Hwb classroom as Fantastic Mr Fox extract in literacy folder.)

Silver. Using those words try to create a map that would show you what the area looks like. Where would the hole and the hill be? Where would the chicken houses be? ETC (I have uploaded MR Carbis's positional words to help give you an idea)

Gold. Have a go at creating your own story map and coming up with a story that would fit into this map. (Think of a setting first like a magic wood, castle or dark cave to help)

Year 4 05.05.20

Year 4 05.05.20

Time for Tuesday learning!

Your literacy and numeracy are scheduled to be live from 9am on google classroom for tomorrow, with instructions how to complete each activity.

Numeracy will be carrying on with finding the costings for WW2 equipment. The work I have seen so far has been amazing with clear layouts and subheadings.

Today you will be thinking and writing about what you would take with you if you were evacuated during WW2.

Remember to look at your VE Day topic based activities, please share your photographs with us as we would love to see them.

Don't forget your spellings, reading and Welsh and times tables.  These are really important and doing a little bit every day will really help.

Happy learning Year 4 and look after your families,

Mrs Maunder and Mrs Phillips.

Year 2 Tuesday 5th May 2020

I hope your plans are starting to come along nicely in readiness for your party on Friday! It would be lovely to see some photos of any of your celebrations.

Literacy
To create an invitation for your VE party
Think about the purpose of an invitation? What is it for? What sort of information is needed? Date/ time/ place/ special requests/ information about what is happening/ what will be there perhaps! Design and make an invitation for your VE party. Try to encourage people to want to go- make it sound exciting and interesting. What delicious treats will there be, any fun games etc. Make it bold and eye-catching, make sure you decorate it. You can use whatever medium you wish to do so. Perhaps you could make a few different ones to give to each member of your house!

Maths
To use ratios in cooking
Explain that food was rationed during the war and only certain amounts of food were available. Talk to your child about the types of food available/ rationed and see which foods they would miss.
We have completed these activities in school, so the children should have some understanding of this. You may need to start off easier and work your way up if need be. On the Year 2 shared folder on HWB there are some wartime recipes. Have a look through them, some of them tell you how many people that recipe will serve. Work out how the amount of ingredients you will need if you were to change the serving to a different number of people. e.g. if it says serves 4 people, how much of each ingredient would you need to serve 8 people? 2 people? etc. I would focus on these recipes below. You might even decide to have a go at making some of them! Write out the new ingredients needed for the servings below in each activity challenge.

Pear crumble- serves 4
Spam hash- serves 1
Pumpkin soup- 8 bowls

Bronze-
Pear crumble- serves 2 and serves 8
Spam has- serves 2

Silver-
Pear crumble- serves 2 and serves 8
Spam has- serves 2 and serves 4
Pumpkin soup- serves 18 and serves 4

Gold-
Pear crumble- serves 8, serves 16 and serves 20
Spam hash- serves 10
Pumpkin soup- serves 24 and serves 2

Topic
To locate and understand the countries involved in the war
The children should have some understanding of the war and VE Day from yesterday's lesson. Today they are going to have a look at the countries called 'allies'  'axis'  'axis controlled'  and 'neutral.'  Explain what each of these mean. If you feel your child only needs to know 'allies' and 'axis' then that is fine. On the Year 2 shared folder on HWB is a document with some websites that can explain this if need be. Using the map and 4 different colours, they are to look at the list of the countries, locate them on the map and colour them in according to their key. This will allow them to see the break up/ formation of the countries during the war. The resources for the maps and countries are on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB.

Bronze- you may only choose 2-3 countries from allies and axis
Silver- you may decide to do all of the allies and axis countries
Gold- you may wish to complete the whole activity including the neutral and axis controlled.

You may also wish to start looking at the different music around during the war and any form of entertainment/ dances that would have taken place. You may like to include these in your celebrations on Friday!

Happy planning!
Mrs. Hassall

Year 6 Monday 4th May 2020

Good morning,

Here we are at the start of a new week and I'm sure you're ready for some new activities. As you are probably already aware Friday 8th May is the 75th anniversary of VE Day and this is a Bank Holiday. So we are taking a break from our Space topic and the activities this week will be linked to VE Day with the idea of hopefully having your own 'stay at home' VE party or picnic on Friday.

Literacy - become a VE Day history detective
weekly spelling test and new spellings
Numeracy - to read scales on drawings accurately

Topic has been planned with yr4, 5 and 6 and activities are based around VE Day. We have made four VE based topic activities for you to complete in any order. They consist of making a peg plane, designing a commemorative mug, designing and making bunting and using your knowledge of forces for science. There may also be other activities added during the week in the build up to VE Day to keep you busy.

Try and remember to complete your 15 minute daily activities of reading, spelling journals and times tables.

Take care and stay safe.

As the year goes on we should become more confident in writing about ourselves and using the placemat less. Have a go, see if you can challenge yourself to add additional detail compared to the writing you did in the Spring Term. Try to include key words and phrases that we have used earlier in the year and add some interesting extra information- pob luc!
I have attached some exemplar models to help you if you are struggling!
I've also attached the answers to the reading task yesterday for you to check how you got on! All attachments can be found via Google Classroom- pop me an email if you have difficulty accessing them.

Year 4 Monday 4th May

Year 4 w/c 4.5.20

What a busy week it was last week! So much wonderful learning from you all and we have really been enjoying the photographs from those of you who have been working just as hard in your books.  The 75th anniversary of VE Day is happening this week on Friday 8th May, so we thought it was so important that our work was centered around this.  There is four days work planned as Friday is a bank holiday.

Numeracy

Everything for maths is based on VE Day and World War Two.  The first task is to buy equipment for troops using addition and subtraction that we have been working on.  The catalogue is the same for silver and gold, but you have different questions.  The task is meant to take you two days as it is quite a long one.

Literacy

Your first task this week is to make an acrostic poem. Take a look on google classroom and all the instructions are there for you.  There is also a task called A-Z where we would like you to think of all the things that make you happy (again full instructions on google classroom).

Topic

We have made four VE based topic activities for you to complete in any order.  They consist of making a peg plane, designing a commemorative mug, designing and making bunting and using your knowledge of forces for science.

Spellings

These will be set on a Monday – learn them throughout the week and then get somebody at home to test you on a Friday. I would really like to know your scores if you want to put them on the stream for google classroom.

Welsh for the week

For Welsh, this week you will need the matching activity from last week.  Firstly, I would like you to translate the descriptions of the animals that you have already matched up.   You can do this on a google docs or on paper, whichever is easiest for you and your family.  Secondly, see the bronze, silver or gold task for creating your own animal descriptions.

Stay safe, look after your families and enjoy your learning!

Shape

Draw these shapes for your child- square, rectangle, triangle, pentagon, hexagon and a circle. Talk about how many sides and points each shape has. What is the difference between a square and a rectangle?

All Children- Play shape detectives. Find as many rectangles, squares, circles and triangles in your home and outside. Draw them in your book and label them with support from an adult.

Most Children- Use natural materials to create as many shapes as you can.

Challenge- Feely Box. Place some shapes into a box and encourage your child to feel the shapes and tell you what shape they think it is. Repeat with all the shapes. Perhaps then an adult could describe the shape and your child could name the shape.

Topic

Rationing food during the war.

Discuss with your child some of the foods that were in short supply during the war- butter, sugar, bacon, ham, cheese, jam, meat, eggs, milk, tea, sweets, breakfast cereals etc. Which food would you miss the most? There wasn't any big supermarkets so you had to visit several shops to buy your food. What different shops do you think they had?

Creative

Make a hat to wear on VE Day out of newspaper. See instructions on https://bletchleypark.org.uk

Boat

I sit tall and hug myself- Hug your knees, feet on the ground.

I lean back- Put your arms behind your back, toes pointed.

I am strong enough to leave the land- Lift up your legs.

I float on the water- Stretch out your arms and balance.

In boat pose, feel and engage[DM1]  your core, right in your belly. When you think you can't keep holding the pose, stay for 2 more breaths, and see what happens.

Year 1 homework blog Monday 4rd May

I hope this finds you well.

Topic-understanding the Tectonic jigsaw.

The next few days we are going to look at Earthquakes. Please feel free to look at this video for support. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ_17DgLHfo.

I have uploaded a tectonic map worksheet, which they can use to help them complete the activities, on Hwb classroom called tectonic plate worksheet.

·         Bronze. Spotting the UK. Identify which country the UK is. Are we touching a plate boundry? What does that mean about how many earthquakes or active volcanoes we are likely to have? https://geology.com/world/world-map.shtml could help.

·         Silver.. Find Iceland, Japan and Switzerland. What do you notice about the location of these counties to plate boundries? Are these countries likely to have earthquakes/volcanoes or mountains?

·         Gold. Gold. Can you recreate the map and label the 7 plates plus the UK. You could make a tectonic cake, use paint, minecraft or create a replica outside using string, stones, toys ETc.

Maths-Skip counting in 5s

We shall look at counting in 5s and the pattern that appears when we do so, up to 100. It might be useful to use a counting song, many of which can be found on youtube.

·         Bronze. Practice counting in 5s forwards and backwards and colour in the splat number square to show the pattern. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares (that when counting in 5s all numbers end in a 0 or a 5.)

·         Silver. Use this link to play a counting in 5 game. They need to identify which 5 is next. https://www.splashlearn.com/math-skills/second-grade/number-sense/count-by-5-s. You can

·         Gold. Can you explain the number pattern you discovered earlier? What would happen if you count in 5s starting from a different number, like 3. (They should notice that another pattern emerges, where all the numbers end in 3 or 8) This is because there are ten squares/we count in blocks of ten. There are only two ending numbers because five is half of ten or it takes two 5's to make a ten.

English-Alliteration names

This work looks at Fantastic Mr Fox. If you have the book yourself you could read it with your child, you could also watch the film. Finally, if you want to punish your child I have uploaded a video of me reading the story. I did not realise how long it would be so I would suggest you listen to it in segments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PssbPxVSs8c

Roald Dahl loves to give character names that fit the characters personality. He likes it even better if the name is alliterative. (Alliteration is where two words share the same starting letter).  In Fantastic Mr Fox he has an alliteration name that fits his personality. He is fantastic for coming up with a way to rescue all the underground creatures and both of his names start with f. Fantastic Mr Fox

·         Bronze. Come up with a new name for Mr Carbis, Mrs Peacock and yourself. These names should fit their personalities.

·         Silver. Bonus points if these names use alliteration. I would like to be called Cool Mr Carbis but perhaps you might think Cruel Mr Carbis.

·         Gold. Can you come up with names for some of the characters in the story? Like Badger, Rat and the four children of Fantastic Mr Fox.

Year 2 Monday 4 May 2020

Welcome back to another week of home learning! Friday 8th May is the 75th anniversary of VE Day which is a bank holiday. Activities this week will be linked to VE Day with the idea of hopefully having your own VE party on Friday.

Literacy
To find out about VE Day
What is VE Day? Discuss with your child the meaning behind this day, what people did etc. Look through the powerpoint on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB, discussing anything as you go. You may feel your child doesn't need to know everything about the War, so it is up to you how much they know. The children are often very interested in these topics and it is also good History for them to learn about, so if you're happy, then go with the flow and see where they take you with it. There are then 2 reading comprehensions also on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB to complete which will help with their understanding- one is a generic VE Day comprehension and the other is more specific to the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Please try and complete both if possible. If you find your child is really interested in this topic then please feel free to look at the gold activity as there will be more in-depth information. Even if they don't answer all of the questions.

Bronze- 1 star
Silver- 2 star
Gold- 3 star

Maths
To crack morse code problems
Explain to children what morse code is and when/ why it was used. Here is a link with some information on if you need it https://kids.kiddle.co/Morse_code
The children will have a code breaking activity where they have to work out the sentences given using the morse code. The alphabet sheet is included with the activity. This is on the Year 2 shared folder on HWB.
Extension- write your own sentences in morse code for somebody to solve

Topic
To create/ decorate bunting
It would be lovely if you could have a mini VE party on Friday at home, where the children help to make/ serve lunch or tea as well as decorate the table/ house. We will look at this in more detail throughout the week, however it would be lovely if they could colour/ make/ decorate some bunting as part of the decoration. On the Year 2 shared folder on HWB are some bunting templates you can colour/ cut, however you may wish to decorate and make your own using the blank template. If you can, attach them to string or something that you can hang them with. See how many you can make.

Enjoy

Year6 Friday 1st May 2020

Good morning all.

I can't quite believe it's the 1st of May today and it looks like the weather is improving so remember to try and get some time out in the garden or during your daily exercise.

Today's activities are on Google Classroom from 9 am along with the other activities for the week.

Literacy - Big Write - to write a story about your new planet
Numeracy - Big Maths Challenges

Try and include your other daily activities for 10 to 15 minutes if possible.

Enjoy the weekend with your family and hopefully the weather will stay sunny.

Take care and stay safe.
