Year 2 Thursday 14 May 2020

I hope you all enjoyed your school trip and had a safe and enjoyable time ๐Ÿ™‚

Literacy
To complete SPAG activities
On the Year 2 shared folder on HWB are activities linked to spelling, punctuation and grammar. There are 2 activities for each level including the answers. When looking at the opposites- you may want to go through some examples using the prefix 'un'. e.g. happy- unhappy. The children maybe inclined to say sad. You may also need to revisit noun/ verb/ adjective/ adverb first too.
Bronze- 1 star
Silver- 2 star
Gold- 3 star

Maths
To subtract 2 digit numbers
This is a BBC daily lesson which can be found here
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrnfvk7 Have a look through the videos provided. They cover various ways of subtracting, in particular using a number line either counting up or back. I would encourage the number line counting up. e.g. 57-28
Start your number line with 28 (the smallest number) and add on until you get to the next tens etc (or whatever your child is most confident with) until you get the the end number of 57. Then add up the number of jumps (numbers you added on) which should give you your answer.

      +2.      +10.     +10.      +7
28-------30------40-------50------ 57

2+10+10+7= 29.             57-28 = 29.       You could encourage an addition sum to check the answer or a calculator.  Alternatively you could do the same as above but +10 in first instance which would take you to 38 and so forth. Only add on what your child is confident adding. However it is a good idea to encourage adding greater than 1 if possible otherwise you could be there a while! It is important to state that even though we are doing a take away sum, in this method we are using our adding skills.

Work through the activities set on the link above. You may also decide to make up some of your own sums as well as practice or if easier.

Bronze- Activity 1
Silver and Gold- Activity 2 ( also 1 if you want some practice)
The karate cats game has bronze, silver and gold levels within it so all levels can be accessed on this.

Try not to use the column method ( the traditional method we all use) unless your child is really confident with it and shows a good understanding. It can get confusing with borrowing! If however it works well for them, then why not!

Topic
To sort animals into groups
This will form your topic work for today and tomorrow.
Have a look at the BBC daily lessons here
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4svgwx looking at different groups of animals. Before completing any of the activities, what animal groups do you know? What are the features of each animal group? Work through the videos/ animations provided and complete the 2 activities set- the quiz and the sorting activity. Once you have done this you may decide to create information pages or animations or any form of work you like based on each animal type with examples. You should end up with 6 pages- 1 for each animal group with the features/ information/ examples of that group.

Enjoy!
