Monday 6th July

This week we are going to look at a different story. We are looking at, "There's an alien in your book" by Tom Flecher. I tried something a little different and had my little one help with the story, hope everyone doesn't mind. As the English task is an inference/prediction task could you please pause the English video on the front cover and complete the task first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8LCpl3oVD8&feature=youtu.be.

English-Prediction

For today we are going to focus on inferring meaning from looking at the front page and seeing what you can guess about the story.

  •          Bronze. Using just the front cover can you guess what the story is about and the characters/setting? They make a guess what happens in the story and whether the alien is friendly or angry.
  •          Silver. They explain their reasoning. I think the alien is friendly because it is smiling. I think it happens in outer space because aliens come from there ETC.
  •          Gold. Write down a blurb/the first page that you think would fit the story. It does not have to be long and you can draw your own pictures.

Maths- finding halves and quarters.

Tuesday and Wednesday we will look at finding quarters. To help prepare us for that we shall have a look at halves first. BBC bitesize has a lesson on finding halves that offer a great explanation of how to find a half. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbpxdp3. I would suggest watching the video and working through the explanation. You could of course do activity 1 as well but they should be familiar with this sort of activity.

  •          Bronze: Using the worksheet saved in Maths called finding one half of a shape they identify whether a shape has less, more or exactly half shaded in. To help them it might be useful to create cut outs of these shapes and have a go at finding halves of these shapes first by folding so they have references.
  •          Silver Activity 3-fruit fractions game-half
  •          Gold. Activity 3-Monkey goes bananas

Topic-same and different

At first the author thought that alien was too different to be from earth. Later on he realised that we are all weird and different and we should celebrate being different. Today we are going to look at some differences and similarities that we all share.

  •          Bronze. Draw a oval and split the oval from top to bottom in half. On one side I would like you to draw your own face. Now give it to a sibling/friend/family member. (You could share the picture using email if you like). Now they have to draw their face on the other side.
  •          Silver. Can you come up with 1 physical difference and 1 physical similarity and write it down on the paper. You may want to watch this video for support. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUrjb4SZnxg
  •          Gold. People are different and similar in more ways then what they look like. Can you think of 1 difference and similarity that you cant see just by looking? This could be that you both support a football team but one supports Liverpool and the other supports Chelsea. Or maybe it has to do with food or what religion you have.
