Reception Home Learning 16.7.20

Reception Class Thursday 16th July

To the Parents and children of Reception Class.

"We don't stop playing because we grow old.

We grow old because we stop playing."

George Bernard Shaw

Literacy- This activity will be over 2 days. (Wednesday/Thursday).

Lifecycle of a butterfly.

Recap the story of The Hungry Caterpillar. There are also lots of simple videos you can watch on YouTube about the life cycle of a butterfly.

There are 4 stages to the lifecycle of a butterfly- egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. Perhaps you can write down the key words to support your child to complete the activity.

All Children-Draw the 4 stages of the butterfly cycle and label each stage.

Most Children- Draw the Lifecyle and add key words.

Challenge- Create a life cycle of a butterfly. For e.g.-

A butterfly lays eggs on a leaf.

The egg hatches into a caterpillar.

Then the caterpillar turns into a chrysalis.

Finally the chrysalis becomes a butterfly.

Numeracy- Halves of numbers

Appeal to your child's sense of fairness, sharing numbers of objects fairly between 2 people. There must be the same number in each half, but it doesn't matter how they are arranged.

All Children- Use some fruit, biscuits etc. to share between 2 plates. Encourage you child to use the language- half. Each plate has half so they have the same on each plate.

Most Children- Use a bottle and 2 cups. Can you share the water so that each person has the same amount?

Challenge- Choose 8 objects. For eg. farm animals, dinosaurs, soft toys etc. Create 2 defined areas that your child can share the amount- 8. How many altogether? How many in each area? So what is half of 8? Is there the same amount in each area? How do you know? Repeat with number 10 and 12.

Topic/Creative-over the week.

Create a Hungry Caterpillar.

This is just an idea but feel free to do your own thing. Make some circles out of card or paper. Or you could use paper plates. Make sure you make a circle for the caterpillars head, the cocoon and the butterfly. Try to use different shades of green for your caterpillar. On the reverse of the caterpillar, you can draw/paint what the caterpillar eat each day. When you have finished, you can hang it in your bedroom or the garden. Remember to write the days of the week and include the caterpillar's legs.

Mindfulness

Joyful Jellyfish

Lie down on a mat or blanket. Let your arms rest loosely by your sides.

Close your eyes and notice your tummy rising and falling with your breathing.

Fell your muscles sinking into the floor beneath you. Let your body be as still as possible.

Imagine you are a joyful jellyfish floating in the water.

Now let your worries glide off your jelly body. Feel them slip away in the water.

Float freely through the sea-nothing in your way, nothing holding you back.

When you are done, rise slowly, taking your joyful jellyfish  heart with you.
