Reception Class Monday 13th July
To the Parents and children of Reception Class. This is the last week of online learning! Thank you so much all of you. You might have followed the blog daily, weekly or just whenever you can. Whatever your situation, I know you have kept your child/children safe and happy, and that is really important during these unusual times. I am hoping we can get back to some normality in September and see those smiling, eager children that we have all missed.

Literacy
We are not going to do Read Write Inc this week. At the end of each term in school, we try to do some stand alone Literacy. This week we are going to base our learning around "The Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. If you don't have the book, you can see an animated version on YouTube.
So read the story together with your child. I'm sure there are words that your child can work out, even by just looking at the pictures. What happened right at the beginning of the story? What did the caterpillar eat on Tuesday? Friday? What did the caterpillar eat to make its tummy ache disappear? At the end of the story the caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Does the caterpillar look anything like a butterfly? What are the differences? Encourage your child to flick through the pages to find the answer. Does a puppy look similar to a full grown dog? What about a baby to a toddler? If you were a caterpillar, which would be your favourite day? Mine would be a Saturday so I could eat all that food. Oh maybe not, as I don't want a tummy ache, so I think it would be Thursday as my favourite fruit is strawberries.
All Children-Using some flashcards with the days of the week on. Encourage your child to order them correctly. Using the F/C and the book/video, can you write a sentence about 1 day of the week? To make it easier, you could just write- On Tuesday the caterpillar eat………….
Most Children- Can you list the names of foods the caterpillar eat on Saturday?
Try to write on your own what happened next. For e.g. The caterpillar had a tummy ache. The caterpillar eat too much food.
Challenge- Write about 2 days using adjectives to describe the fruits. On Monday the caterpillar eat one red apple. On Wednesday the caterpillar eat three juicy plums.
Numeracy- Symmetrical Patterns
Recognising reflective symmetry is the most basic form of symmetry. Children need to begin to understand that one half is a mirror image of the other half. Once children understand the concept of symmetry, the next stage is to copy, complete, create their own symmetrical shapes and patterns. Can you spot and correct an error? Remember that a symmetrical pattern/shape is a reflection of the other, rather than a repeat in the same orientation.
All Children- Can you go on a hunt around the house, garden on a walk etc. to find reflective images. This could be a mirror, window, water etc.
Most Children- Symmetrical Monsters. Draw a vertical line down the centre of a piece of paper. Explain that the same shape and colours should be on each side of the line in a symmetrical pattern to create the picture. So if you have 2 red eyes on this side of the line, what do you need to do on the other side of the line? Etc. You can you coloured pens or paint.
Challenge- Symmetrical Houses. You can use lego if you have any, to make a symmetrical house. If not you can do it on paper.
Topic/Creative-over the week.
Create a Hungry Caterpillar.
This is just an idea but feel free to do your own thing. Make some circles out of card or paper. Or you could use paper plates. Make sure you make a circle for the caterpillars head, the cocoon and the butterfly. Try to use different shades of green for your caterpillar. On the reverse of the caterpillar, you can draw/paint what the caterpillar eats each day. When you have finished, you can hang it in your bedroom or the garden. Remember to write the days of the week and include the caterpillar's legs.
Mindfulness
Name That Feeling
This is an activity for 2 or more people.
People have feelings everyday. You might feel happy, sad, angry, surprised, excited or scared. To name but a few examples. When you feel a certain way, your face and body might show it. You might smile or cry. You might open your mouth and eyes wide, or hunch over and look down.
One person picks a feeling and acts it out without talking.
The others guess the feeling. Then each person describes a time when they have had that feeling.
Each person takes a turn acting out a feeling.
