Reception Class Wednesday 15th July
To the Parents and children of Reception Class.
"An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward.
So when life is dragging you back with difficulties,
It means that it's going to launch you into something great."
Paula Coelho
Literacy- This activity will be over 2 days. (Wednesday/Thursday).
Lifecycle of a butterfly.
Recap the story of The Hungry Caterpillar. There are also lots of simple videos you can watch on YouTube about the life cycle of a butterfly.
There are 4 stages to the lifecycle of a butterfly- egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. Perhaps you can write down the key words to support your child to complete the activity.
All Children-Draw the 4 stages of the butterfly cycle and label each stage.
Most Children- Draw the lifecyle and add key words.
Challenge- Create a life cycle of a butterfly. For e.g.-
A butterfly lays eggs on a leaf.
The egg hatches into a caterpillar.
Then the caterpillar turns into a chrysalis.
Finally the chrysalis becomes a butterfly.
Numeracy- Symmetrical Patterns
All Children- To understand symmetry. This needs to be done with 1 other person. Place some rope or string on the floor and pretend that is a mirror. So 1 person makes a shape and the other pretends they are the reflection, mirroring the shape. If you put your right hand up, which hand does your partner put up?
Most Children- Look at the flowers in your garden or during a walk. Are they symmetrical? Can you paint/ draw a symmetrical flower?
Challenge- Make a card. Your child draws a shape on folded card, where the fold forms one side. They cut it out, leaving the fold, then open to make a symmetrical shape. Decorate and put a message inside.
Topic/Creative-over the week.
Create a Hungry Caterpillar.
This is just an idea but feel free to do your own thing. Make some circles out of card or paper. Or you could use paper plates. Make sure you make a circle for the caterpillars head, the cocoon and the butterfly. Try to use different shades of green for your caterpillar. On the reverse of the caterpillar, you can draw/paint what the caterpillar eat each day. When you have finished, you can hang it in your bedroom or the garden. Remember to write the days of the week and include the caterpillar's legs.
Mindfulness
Breath by Breath
Any day, any time, you can take 3 soft, slow, mindful breaths and watch life flow.
Your breaths help you pause and notice where you are and what is going on right now, in this moment.
You are never in yesterday or tomorrow. You are only here now. If something from yesterday upsets you, now is the time to notice your thoughts or feelings about it and work with them or let them go.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Let memories of yesterday fly away from your heart and fade away. Notice this moment now.
If something about tomorrow worries you, remind yourself that you can change what is happening now. Tomorrow is not here yet.
Remember that everything in life changes. In each new moment you can start over. In each new moment, with each breath, everything is fresh.
