Year 1 Wednesday learning

English-Comprehension

Using our understanding of verbs, nouns and adjectives we are going to have a go at looking at comprehension. This includes writing sentences that make sense for other people to comprehend (Fancy word for understand) and we are also going to check our comprehension/understanding skills from reading text.

Please see the BBC bitesize lesson https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z942kty for a lovely video on what comprehension is.

·         Bronze. Activity two of the BBC lesson.

·         Silver. Activity three of the BBC lesson using the worksheet

·         Gold. Pick a favourite story that you know very well. Can you write your own comprehension/understanding questions for others to have a go at answering? Remember they must be able to answer your question by reading the story. Asking, "Which character is my favourite in the story?" Is not a fair question as the story does not tell you. Instead you could ask who defeats the green goblin?

Maths- counting forwards and backwards in 2s

Using hit the button we are going to look at the 2 times table. We have been looking at counting in twos and lots of two over the past few days and nothing has changed. When we say times we really mean lots of. If it helps why not have pairs of socks in front of you as a guide.

·         Bronze. Get a collection of socks (or anything else that are in groups of two.)  and use them to create the two times table. Underneath each grouping of socks write down the sum so the child can use it as a reference for hit the button. I have started an example down below to show what I mean. (db is my symbol of a pair of socks)

db                   dbdb         dbdbdb

1 X 2 = 2         2X2=4       3X2=6

·         Silver.  Play hit the button https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button and use the two times table option. I would tell the children that _ X 2 simply means _ lots of 2. (EG 3 X 2 means 3 lots of 2.)

·         Gold. They may come to the realisation themselves but if they don't see that the 2 times table is the same as doubling after a couple of games make sure to point that out to them as they have been learning doubles for some time now. Switch to playing hit the question. They can use their socks times table to help them.

Topic-Cress investigation

We will take a break at maps and come back next week. Today I would like you to check on your cress seeds and complete the first observation sheet. I have saved this sheet in the topic folder and called it observation sheet 1. The week after we will end the experiment and see what our results are.

·         Bronze. Can you tick or circle the options that best suit the various cress growing containers. Growing well, not growing well and no change.

·         Silver. Can you draw or take a picture of the cress seeds. If possible you could also measure the cress with the help of a parent using a ruler and write down how tall each cress shoot is. (Tip. Why not complete this using the computer and insert pictures of the cress seeds?

·         Gold. Which cress has changed the most? Can you describe the changes. The stem has started to grow, the seeds have swelled ETC.
