Year 2 Friday 5 June 2020

Literacy/ Topic

Year 1 and Year 2 will continue their sessions with Colette from The Wye & Usk Foundation. Your activities from Session One and Two looked fabulous well done to you all.  So today we will take part in  session 3. All the activities can be found at:

Session 3: Prevent Pollution!

What you need to know: This week's session looks at the how rivers get polluted and what we can all do to help prevent this happening.  It also introduces the concept of filtration as a way of cleaning water. It builds on last week's session, providing a further opportunity to encourage scientific thinking.  Designing their experiment, predicting what might happen, then seeing if the predictions came true. Following the experiment, we look at the fact that salmon and stonefly nymphs can only live in clean water, so if we see them, they indicate or tell us the water in the river is clean. Hence, they are called indicator species.

Key words: pollution, filtration, indicator species

All you need to do:

Watch the video clip.

Read through the activity sheet with children.

Recap on the things we can do to help keep rivers clean, look at the video.

Discuss how the fish must feel when their river gets polluted decide which poster they want to design.  Discuss whether they are going to write a poem or design a poster and its aim.

Decide whether or not to do the filtration experiment.  Recap by watching the part of the video and look at the suggestions on the activity sheet. You can try all kinds of filters.

As part of your Big Write we would love to see your posters and/ or poems with your very important messages!

Please share any work you do with us via pupil folders, email and/ or twitter. Don't forget to include us @trellechprimary and @WUFoundation, we would love to see what we have been up to!

I have also uploaded the resources to the Year 2 shared folder on HWB

Friday's Maths consist of our online Learn its and Clic tests, however I will be adding paper versions onto the Y2 shared folder on HWB instead
Clic tests- the children should have no more than 10-15 minutes maximum to complete these. They can do workings out if need be on the sheet or on a separate sheet. Just a reminder- question 1 is for them to partition the number- so what is the value of each? e.g 36- 3=30 6=6. A lot of the children assume it is halving the number because of the way it is laid out!
Learn its- these are timed at 30 seconds. The children are used to this so please ensure it is only 30 seconds! The learn its are to develop their quick recall and the sums given are the number facts that the children should be confident with to answer rapidly. You may decide to give your child 1 minute and see how many they can complete as there are new levels on there.
SAFE- the children haven't yet completed these but they involve other maths covered in school aside from basic number. The children have covered these areas so should be able to answer some. Again I would say no more than 10-15 minutes.  I would now try to reduce this time to 5-10 minutes

Bronze- Clic 1/ Learn its 1 / SAFE 1
Silver- Clic 2/ Learn its 2/ SAFE 2
Gold- Clic 3/ Learn its 3/ SAFE 3

You are of course welcome to complete all of these challenges if you wish!

Below are your new spellings to practice throughout the week. Your child knows which colour they are. Remember to get tested before your new words again next Friday. When you practise your spellings, use what you know from school-

Look, say, cover, write, check
Spellamadoodle- draw a squiggly line and write each of your spellings along the line
Pyramids- build a pyramid starting with the first letter, adding a letter each time e.g. then
Sentences- write sentences including your spelling word

Remember if you aren't sure what the word means- use a dictionary to help you
I have also added onto the Y2 shared folder on HWB, the list of High Frequency words that the children should be familiar with, or increasingly familiar with for reading and spelling. This is something you should also look at throughout this time and even add in to the spelling lists if you wish. I have also added the Y3/4 high frequency words list to the folder, it is not expected that your child can read and write every one of these words, but if they are mostly confident with the Y2 ones then please move onto this list.

Monday 8th June will be our Sports day. Thank you to those of you who sent over some suggestions for different races! On the Year 2 shared folder on HWB and also below are the 7 races you can take part it. You will get 1 point for your house for every race you take part in. You do not have to do them all. We will however ask for a photo of video to be sent or uploaded so we can see who has done what and how many points you have learnt for your house. We will then add up all of the points across the School and announce the overall winning house on Tuesday 9th June. It would be great if you could wear your house colour when doing so, to make it it even more fun! You may even make your signs/ banners to show support for your house!

Don't forget the 30 days wild challenges- day 4!

Have a lovely weekend!
