June 1st year 1 home learning blog

Monday 1st of June

Welcome back from the half term. As always I hope everyone is feeling well.

Maths-measuring mass using non-standard measurements

We will be looking at measuring various objects using kitchen scales/weighing scales. I would suggest having an assortment of objects including some that are similar, such as books of different sizes. If you do not have any scales then I have found an online game that requires you to find the heaviest object. You could also use this game for an extension. https://www.mathplayground.com/balance_scales.html

  • Bronze. Using sticky tape, dry wipe markers or blue tack they weigh each item item. They then order the list of items in terms of lightest to heaviest.
  • Silver. They use more than (>) and less than (<) to compare the objects. As an extra challenge they could also predict which item would weigh more.
  • Gold. They begin to use standard measures with support. I would suggest using metric measurements that they record next to each object. As an extra challenge they could try to work out roughly how much heavier/lighter an object is by using there fraction knowledge. (Half as heavy, quarter lighter ETC).

Topic-Pen pal

One of the first learning tasks was about writing letters and I discussed the possibility of setting up a pen pal system. I am pleased to say that recently the priory care home has agreed to setting up such a system. I would like you to write to one of the residents of the care home. Remember these individuals have been isolated for the longest time and many of them are feeling lonely, not being able to see friends or family. I will create a folder with the contact details and a list of the residents that I got sent in the topic folder.

What you write about is up to you but here is some ideas.

  • You could tell them about your hobbies or anything that you like doing.
  • You could ask them what they like to do or what their hobbies are
  • You could tell them what you think about school and what your favourite lessons are.
  • You could ask what their school was like.
  • You could tell them what you want to do when your older
  • Ask them what they would like to do

Important. Please do not write your full name, your address or any other private information. Parents/guardians could you read through the letter before sending it.

  • Bronze. Write a letter using one kind message (I hope you are well, you are the best, ETC) starting it with Dear... and finishing it yours faithfully...
  • Silver. As above plus one of the suggested ideas
  • Gold. As above plus your own ideas/at least another one of the suggested ideas.

English-Using the connective and.

It is important for them to get a grasp of using the joining word/connective and correctly. You can use and to join two words together such as jelly and ice cream. You can also use and to join two sentences together. When you are doing your own writing it is important not to overuse and. This is a common mistake and I suggest you only use the word once in a sentence every so often, not in every sentence. Otherwise your writing becomes really long and the sentences also become boring and the reader starts to run out of breath and then the reader will just stop reading and then you just wasted your time and that becomes annoying for both you and the reader and I hope you get my point about only using and every so often.

The weather was lovely. I had finished all my work. The weather was lovely and I had finished all my work. I have uploaded a twinkl powerpoint that explains the use of and as well as a worksheet activity in the English folder.

  • Bronze: Complete party time worksheet *.
  • Silver: Complete party time worksheet**
  • Gold: Try to include and in your pen pal letter. A important part of using and is to know when to stop.
