Reception Class Thursday 25th June
To the Parents and children of Reception Class
"You will teach them to fly, but they will not fly your flight.
You will teach them to dream, but they will not dream your dream.
You will teach them to live, but they will not live your life.
Nevertheless, in every flight, in every life, in every dream, the print of the way you taught them will remain".
Mother Teresa
Matching letters
This activity to complete over the week.
If you have some bottle tops, please could you write t u v w x y z T U V W X Y Z on each top, then have a go during the week to match the small case letter to the capital letter. Explain to your child that they have a capital letter at the beginning of their name and when we write a sentence. Can you think of anyone that has one of these letters at the beginning of their name?
Literacy
Mrs Garbett
I am going to repeat speed set 2 sounds again as these really need to be totally embedded. The sentences I am using, are however becoming progressively harder. If you really think your child has totally embedded speed set 2 sounds, then feel free to access the daily speed set 3 sounds on Read Write Inc live lessons. Try to write sentences daily if you can.
Speed set 2 sounds are- ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy

Numeracy
Keep these activities on the boil-
Counting to 20 and beyond
Forming numbers correctly
Identify numbers 10-20
Doubles to 10
Addition to 10
Days of the week
Subtraction to 10. Having them grouped in 10's is helpful.
Teen numbers
This is a little investigation to determine which vehicle travels the furthest.
· You will need a ramp. This can be made if you have a strip of wood!! No doubt you are shouting at me now!! What about using an ironing board that can be placed slanting on a chair to make a ramp.
· Selection of toy vehicles or you could something else.
· Chalk
· Tape measure
You can do this investigation outside. But it is good to have different surfaces that the vehicles travel on to- concrete, grass, tiles, carpet etc. So when you have made your ramp, talk about the different vehicles you have used. Use about 3 to begin with. Which 1 do you think will travel the furthest? Why?
All Children- Using the 3 vehicles you have, decide which vehicle will travel the furthest? Then test you prediction. As the vehicle comes down the ramp, place a chalk mark so you remember how far it travelled. Was your prediction correct? If you prediction wasn't correct, can you explain why?
Most Children- As above but can you change the variables. How can we make the vehicles travel even further? So think about making the ramp steeper or changing the surface that the vehicle travels on. But encourage your child to discuss these variables.
Challenge- As above but can you have a go at measuring. It could be using a tape measure. But you can also use non-standard units. For e.g. How many tins of baked beans does it travel?
Topic/Creative- Over the week.
(Next week we will be studying another artist, any suggestions?).
Nature Activity.
All you will need is an empty egg box. If you like you can decorate this first in any way you wish. Then inside you can either write numbers on each egg case or dot a particular colour. Then on your walk or from the garden, collect the number and colours you have chosen. For eg, 4 yellow- could be 4 buttercups. Just make sure you check with an adult before you pick. So now you are ready to collect nature treasures. When you have collected all your treasures, can you make a simple picture? Maybe a face, an animal etc.
Mindfulness
Peaceful Place
Lie down on a mat or blanket. Let your arms rest loosely by your sides.
Imagine you are in your own peaceful place where you feel happy and safe. Explore your peaceful place. Notice details of the landscape. Listen for animals or water. Smell the trees and flowers.
Imagine doing something fun! You could ride a whale, fly with an eagle or run with an elephant.
Before you leave, discover a hidden gift. It is just for you.
To return to the present moment, say goodbye to your peaceful place and your animal friends.
Bring your attention back to the sounds around you. Open your eyes. Can you hold your peaceful place in your heart?
