Year 1 Monday 22nd June

Week three of the Enchanted Wood. This time they get a tad lost, meet Mr Whiskers and are about to climb the Fareaway tree. We are going to listen/read up to the point that they are just about to climb the tree, which won't be as easy as they thought.  Up to the 31.15 minute mark from the 21.12 minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPiOHF3g1AU.

English-Verbs

A lot happens in the next section of the Enchanted Wood. This means that there will be lots of doing words or verbs. We will be using this BBC bitesize lesson to help us understand verbs. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z3y9vwx. I would suggest watching the video before completing the activities

·         Bronze. Complete activity 1. Keep going until you get all the answers right.

·         Silver. Have a go at activity 2.

·         Gold. I would like you to do activity 3. Give the learners the choice of using the video provided or using the Enchanted Wood story. It might be easier using the Bitesize video as they provide a transcript as well.

Maths- Number squares, rectangles and sticks.

The children sort numbers 2-20 into 2 squares long rectangles similar to the odd/even refresher video from last week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3uxBI9npas&t=188s.

  •  Bronze. Sort the numbers 1-20 into flat tops and odd tops. You can use squared paper to help and colour in the squares or tiles/lego/dominos.
  • ·Silver.  Create a table of results with the headings below. Can you predict where the next 5 numbers past 20 will go?

Numbers that have a flat top          Numbers that have an odd block.

  • Gold. You should find that the numbers that have a flat top are all lots/multiples of two apart from 1. Can you spot some other patterns? Things to try. What happens if you add a flat top number with a flat top number. (2+4=?) Is the number also a flat top number? Does this always happen? You could also try subtracting or adding two odd block numbers or one flat top and one odd block.

Topic-compass

They get lost in the story an awful lot. It would help them if they had a compass and map to help find their way. In this lesson we are going to explore the four cardinal directions. This is just a fancy name for North, East, South and West. I always remember these using the Acronym Never Eat Shredded Wheat. I have also heard the term Naughty Elephants Squirt Water.

  •  Bronze. Use the BBC game http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/sysm/landscapes/highlands_islands/flash/index.shtml?flash=land_ms_compass to learn about the compass points.
  • Silver. Mark out the garden with signs saying the four directions North, East, South West. You now play Simon says but with directions. Walk to the north, hop to the east, ETC. To make the game harder you introduce North East, North West, South East and South West.
  •  Gold. Bury or hide toys in the garden (make sure you mark where they are so you know). You now give instructions to someone in your household to find the toys using only the compass points. Walk north 10 steps. Now walk east 5 steps Etc. Swap over.

Bonus. If you have access to a magnet you can have a go at creating your own compass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsyg25qVC3g. This video helps explain but I will say the more times you stroke the needle, the longer the compass will last. (It suggests ten times but I would do it at least 30 times)
